Description

Château d’Yquem 1990 is one of the great reference points for noble sweet wine, a historic Sauternes renowned for its remarkable depth, precision, and longevity. Produced from botrytised Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, it carries the prestige of being the only wine in the 1855 Bordeaux classification awarded Premier Cru Supérieur status.

Tasting Notes
Château d’Yquem 1990 typically shows a deep golden to amber hue, reflecting both concentration and age. The nose is layered and opulent, with aromas of honey, candied citrus, dried apricot, saffron, toasted almond, and subtle notes of vanilla and spice. On the palate, it is rich yet beautifully balanced, combining luscious sweetness with vibrant acidity that keeps the wine focused and remarkably fresh. Expect complex flavours of marmalade, quince, brûléed peach, and exotic spice, finishing long and refined. This vintage is built for very long aging and can continue to develop gracefully for decades under ideal cellaring conditions.

Production
Made in Sauternes, Bordeaux, Château d’Yquem benefits from a unique terroir where morning mists from the Ciron River encourage botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, to develop on the grapes. The vineyard is planted mainly to Sémillon with a smaller proportion of Sauvignon Blanc, and fruit is harvested in multiple selective pickings to ensure only perfectly botrytised berries are used. Vinification is meticulous and low-yielding, with each vine producing only a very small amount of wine. The result is an intensely concentrated dessert wine shaped by careful parcel selection, hand harvesting, and patient cellar work to preserve freshness, complexity, and aging potential.

Food & Serving
Serve Château d’Yquem 1990 slightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, to best show its aromatic detail and balance. It is exceptional with foie gras, blue cheese, tarte Tatin, crème brûlée, or fruit-based desserts, and it can also be enjoyed beautifully on its own as a contemplative wine. Decanting is usually not necessary, but an older bottle may benefit from gentle aeration shortly before serving.

Producer
Château d’Yquem has been one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates for more than 400 years and is regarded as the benchmark for fine Sauternes. Its singular position was confirmed in the 1855 classification, when it became the only estate in the region to receive Premier Cru Supérieur status. Over the centuries, the château has maintained its reputation for uncompromising quality, extremely low yields, and wines of exceptional longevity and worldwide acclaim.
