Description
Château d’Yquem 1967 is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic sweet wines, made from carefully botrytized Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc in the legendary Sauternes appellation. Revered for its rarity, concentration, and extraordinary longevity, it is the only wine in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification to hold the prestigious Premier Cru Supérieur status.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a rich golden to amber hue that reflects both age and concentration. The nose is deeply layered, with notes of dried apricot, marmalade, honey, saffron, candied citrus, and toasted nuts, often developing more complex hints of beeswax, spice, and caramel with time.
The palate is luxurious yet beautifully balanced, combining intense sweetness with bright acidity that keeps the wine fresh and refined. Expect great depth, elegance, and a long, persistent finish. Château d’Yquem 1967 has exceptional aging potential and, in a strong bottle, can continue to evolve gracefully for many years, gaining even more tertiary complexity.
Production
Produced in Sauternes, Bordeaux, on the estate’s elevated terroir, Château d’Yquem benefits from morning mists and afternoon sunshine that encourage noble rot, or botrytis cinerea. The grapes are harvested by hand in multiple selective passes, with only perfectly botrytized berries chosen, resulting in extremely low yields.
Vinification is carried out with meticulous care to preserve purity, balance, and concentration. The blend is traditionally dominated by Sémillon, with Sauvignon Blanc adding freshness and aromatic lift, and the wine is aged in oak to build texture and complexity.
Food & Serving
Château d’Yquem is excellent with foie gras, blue cheeses, fruit-based desserts, tarte tatin, or simply enjoyed on its own as a contemplative wine. Serve it lightly chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, and consider decanting only if the bottle is very old and showing reduced aromas, using a gentle and careful approach.
Producer
Château d’Yquem has been a benchmark for sweet wine for more than 400 years and is regarded as the most famous estate in Sauternes. The château’s reputation was cemented by its unique Premier Cru Supérieur classification in 1855, a distinction given to no other Sauternes property.
The estate has survived phylloxera, changing ownership, and generations of vinicultural challenges while maintaining an uncompromising standard of quality. Today, it remains one of the most celebrated names in fine wine, known worldwide for producing some of the most prized dessert wines ever made.
