Description

Château Deyrem-Valentin Margaux 2020 is a refined, classically styled red from one of the appellation’s most quietly reliable estates. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon–led blend that captures the elegance, perfume and fine-boned structure that have made Margaux world‑famous, while offering real depth and concentration from the outstanding 2020 vintage. Dating back to 1730, this historic estate brings together centuries of know‑how with a modern, quality‑driven approach in both vineyard and cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Deyrem-Valentin shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, hinting at both youth and intensity. The nose opens with classic Margaux finesse: aromas of blackcurrant, ripe black cherry and wild berries interwoven with violets, graphite, cedar, and a touch of tobacco leaf. Subtle notes of vanilla, baking spice, and cocoa from barrel aging sit elegantly in the background, adding complexity without overpowering the fruit. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, precise and beautifully balanced. Cabernet Sauvignon brings a firm but polished tannin structure and a cool, cassis-driven core, while Merlot adds succulent plum, dark raspberry and a round, velvety mid-palate. Petit Verdot contributes a hint of dark spice and floral lift on the finish. The acidity is fresh and linear, giving the wine energy and length, with a lingering finish of black fruits, fine cocoa and a gentle mineral edge. While already approachable with some air, the 2020 has the structure to evolve gracefully over 10–15 years, gaining further complexity and silkiness in bottle.

Production
Château Deyrem-Valentin’s vineyards sit in the heart of picture-perfect Margaux, on well-drained gravel and sandy-gravel soils that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and renowned for producing wines of fragrance and finesse. The vines average over 35 years of age, naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor in the berries. The Sorge family practices meticulous viticulture, with strict selection in the vineyard and multiple passes at harvest to pick only optimally ripe grapes. In the cellar, the grapes are carefully sorted and vinified parcel by parcel to preserve the character of each plot. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with 47% new oak and 53% barrels of one previous use (“barriques d’un vin”), striking a deliberate balance between structure, aromatic complexity and the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This Margaux is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte steak, duck breast, veal chops or a richly flavored beef stew. It also works beautifully with game birds, truffled poultry and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatics and refinement. Younger bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully open, while more mature bottles can be gently double‑decanted shortly before serving.

Producer
Château Deyrem-Valentin traces its roots back to 1730 and is one of Margaux’s traditional family‑run estates, set amid the appellation’s characteristic gravel terraces. Now in the hands of the Sorge family, the château has built a reputation for producing classically styled, terroir‑driven wines that often overdeliver relative to their formal classification. A steadfast commitment to quality—seen in low yields, hand selection and careful, detail‑oriented winemaking—has earned Deyrem-Valentin a loyal following among Bordeaux enthusiasts. The estate is regarded as one of the noteworthy insider addresses in Margaux, consistently turning out wines that combine elegance, aromatic complexity and aging potential.
