Description
Château Cos d’Estournel 2005 Magnum is a standout Saint-Estèphe from one of Bordeaux’s most iconic estates, showing the depth, precision, and longevity that have made the château famous. As a 2nd Growth in the 1855 Classification, it carries both historical prestige and the kind of serious structure collectors look for in a great Left Bank wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, intense ruby-purple colour that hints at its concentration. The bouquet is layered and refined, unfolding with blackcurrant, black cherry, cedar, tobacco, and warming spices, all lifted by a subtle mineral edge.
The palate is rich and powerful, yet composed, with finely integrated tannins giving the wine both backbone and elegance. The finish is long and persistent, echoing dark chocolate, spice, and ripe black fruit. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and the depth to evolve beautifully for decades.
Production
Sourced from Saint-Estèphe in Bordeaux, the wine reflects the gravelly, clay-influenced terroir that helps Cabernet Sauvignon achieve power and precision while Merlot adds roundness and suppleness. The grapes are harvested with careful selection, and the wine is vinified to preserve concentration, freshness, and the layered character of the vintage.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, game, duck breast, and rich mushroom dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C; decanting for at least 1–2 hours is recommended, especially while it is still youthful, to allow the aromatics and texture to open fully.
Producer
Château Cos d’Estournel is one of the great names of Saint-Estèphe, founded in the early 19th century by Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel and long admired for its bold style and distinctive identity. Its exotic architecture and consistent quality have made it one of Bordeaux’s most recognisable estates, and its status as a 2nd Growth underlines its importance in the region and beyond.
