Description
Château Calon-Ségur 2003 in magnum format is a striking example of one of Saint-Estèphe’s most iconic estates, combining depth, structure, and remarkable character. Known for its unmistakable heart emblem and storied past, the château has long stood among the benchmark properties of the northern Médoc. The 2003 vintage, shaped by an exceptionally ripe growing season, offers a powerful and unusually generous expression of Calon-Ségur.
Tasting Notes
Deep in color, the wine shows a black-purple core that hints at its richness and concentration. The bouquet unfolds with cassis, blackberry, licorice, and earthy underbrush notes, layered with the kind of opulence that marked the best northern Médocs of 2003.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and polished, with black fruit at the center, supple richness, and a long, persistent finish. Despite its density, the tannins are well integrated and the wine retains a sense of balance and classic Saint-Estèphe firmness. In magnum, it has excellent aging potential and should continue to develop gracefully over many years.
Production
Château Calon-Ségur sits on a distinctive terroir of deep gravel over clay subsoils, a combination that brings both power and finesse to the wines. The vineyard lies in the far north of Médoc and is often among the last to be harvested, allowing for complete ripening. Traditional vinification and careful handling are central to the estate’s style, with the team emphasizing patience and gentleness throughout the process.
Food & Serving
This is a wine for rich, savory dishes such as roast lamb, beef Wellington, slow-braised short ribs, or game with wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours if opening now, especially to allow the wine to fully reveal its aromatic depth.
Producer
Château Calon-Ségur is one of the oldest estates in Saint-Estèphe, with origins dating back to 1147. Once owned by the Marquis de Ségur, who also held Lafite and Latour, it became famous for his remark that his heart belonged to Calon—an enduring symbol still shown on the label today. Now under modern ownership and with long-time consultant Eric Boissenot contributing expertise, the château continues to rank among the most respected and celebrated properties in the region.
