Description
Château Branaire-Ducru is a classic 4th Growth Saint-Julien, prized for its precision, finesse, and beautifully balanced expression of Bordeaux. With roots tied to the former Château Beychevelle and a strong modern renaissance under the Maroteaux family since 1988, it stands as one of the appellation’s most refined and dependable estates.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows the dark, polished character typical of Médoc, with aromas and flavors of blackcurrant, dark berries, and cherry layered over cedar, tobacco, and subtle spice. The palate is poised and harmonious, with fine-grained tannins, bright freshness, and a long, elegant finish that speaks to both restraint and depth.
This is a cellar-worthy Saint-Julien with the structure to develop gracefully over time, gaining complexity and softness with age while preserving its signature clarity and balance.
Production
The estate farms 60 hectares in the heart of Saint-Julien, where Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, supported by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. Careful vineyard work, low yields, and a rigorous cellar approach aim to preserve purity and precision, while maturation in French oak for 16 to 20 months, including 60 to 65% new barrels, adds structure and dimension without overwhelming the fruit.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for classic Bordeaux fare such as roast beef, lamb rack, and game dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for a few hours is recommended if drinking young to allow the wine to open and show its full aromatic detail.
Producer
Château Branaire-Ducru has long been one of Saint-Julien’s most respected names, known for producing elegant, classically styled wines with consistent quality. Since the Maroteaux family took over in 1988, the estate has undergone a notable revival and strengthened its standing as a benchmark producer in the appellation.
