Description
Château Beychevelle is one of Saint-Julien’s most iconic estates, with a history that reaches back to the 16th century and a proud place among Bordeaux’s 1855 Fourth Growths. The 2023 vintage brings together the estate’s signature blend of power and refinement, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot working in perfect harmony.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby color that hints at its concentration and class. The nose is layered and expressive, unfolding with blackcurrant, black cherry, and blackberry, followed by cedar, cigar box, violets, graphite, and subtle spice.
The palate is rich yet beautifully poised, with ripe fruit framed by polished tannins and fresh acidity. There is impressive depth without excess weight, and the finish is long, mineral, and elegant. While approachable with decanting in its youth, this is a wine with strong aging potential and should develop added complexity over the next 15 to 25 years.
Production
The grapes for Château Beychevelle 2023 come from carefully selected parcels in Saint-Julien, where deep gravel soils and the cooling influence of the Gironde create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and the supporting varieties. Fruit is harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness and vinified separately in the estate’s modern gravity-fed cellar to preserve precision and character.
After fermentation, the wine is aged for around 18 months in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new oak. This élevage adds structure, subtle spice, and refined notes of cedar and vanilla while respecting the wine’s pure fruit profile and classic Bordeaux balance.
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for roast lamb, grilled ribeye, duck breast, or rich dishes with mushrooms and truffle. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for 1 to 2 hours if opening young, to allow the wine to fully reveal its aromatics and texture.
Producer
Château Beychevelle is one of the great historic names of Saint-Julien, with origins dating back to the 1500s. Its name comes from the phrase "baisse voile" or "lower the sails," a nod to Admiral Jean-Louis Nogaret de La Valette and the estate’s long connection to the Gironde river. Since 1855 it has been ranked as a Fourth Growth, and it remains a benchmark for the appellation’s refined style.
Owned since 2011 by Castel Group and Suntory, the estate has benefited from major investment in both vineyard and cellar, including a state-of-the-art gravity-fed winery inaugurated in 2016. Today, Beychevelle is widely admired for combining power with elegance, and for producing some of the most polished and sought-after wines in Saint-Julien.
