Description
Château Batailley 2019 in double magnum format is a classic Pauillac from one of the Médoc’s oldest estates, and a Grand Cru Classé since the famous 1855 classification. Backed by the heritage of Borie-Manoux and the Castéja family, it combines history, pedigree, and the kind of structure that has made Pauillac one of Bordeaux’s most sought-after appellations.
Tasting Notes
Deeply colored and typically firm in style, the wine shows the dark-fruited, graphite-tinged profile associated with Pauillac. Expect aromas of cassis, blackberry, cedar, tobacco leaf, and hints of gravelly earth, followed by a palate built on Cabernet Sauvignon power, with polished tannins, fresh acidity, and layers of black fruit and savory spice. The 2019 vintage should have excellent aging potential, especially in double magnum, where it will evolve slowly and gracefully over many years.
With time in bottle, the wine is likely to gain complexity, bringing more nuance to its cedar, earth, and cigar-box notes while softening its tannic frame.
Production
The estate’s vineyards lie on the classic Pauillac terroir of gravel, sand, and clay, a combination that offers both drainage and depth for Cabernet-driven wines. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and small portions of Cabernet Franc, reflecting the traditional Left Bank style. Harvesting is carried out with the aim of preserving fruit purity and balance, followed by vinification designed to bring out structure, concentration, and the estate’s signature finesse.
Food & Serving
This is a natural match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, entrecôte, venison, and rich mushroom dishes, as well as hard cheeses with depth and character. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young, especially to allow the wine’s layers to open fully.
Producer
Château Batailley is one of Pauillac’s historic properties, with origins tied to the aftermath of the 1453 Battle of Castillon, when the estate’s name took on its enduring significance. The château became a 5th Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification and has remained closely linked to the Borie-Manoux and Castéja families for generations. Today, it stands as a benchmark for traditional Pauillac, respected for continuity, family ownership, and consistently well-made Grand Cru Classé wines.
