Description
Château Charmail’s 2017 Haut-Médoc is a polished Bordeaux from one of the Left Bank’s respected Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel estates. It combines classic Médoc structure with approachable charm, offering a finely tuned balance of ripe fruit, freshness, and oak complexity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby colour with a healthy youthful core. The nose is expressive yet refined, with aromas of blackcurrant, plum, cedar, graphite, dried herbs, and a subtle smoky toast from well-judged oak.
The palate is medium to full-bodied, with supple tannins, bright acidity, and layers of dark berries, cassis, and savoury tobacco-like notes. The finish is long and composed, with enough structure to reward a few more years in bottle, while already showing considerable harmony and drinkability.
Production
Produced in the Haut-Médoc appellation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Charmail benefits from classic gravelly soils that help the vines drain well and encourage concentration. The estate’s style is typically built on careful vineyard management and traditional Bordeaux winemaking, with harvesting at optimal ripeness and vinification designed to preserve fruit purity, structure, and balance. Aging in oak barrels adds refinement, spice, and texture without overwhelming the wine’s core identity.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, grilled entrecôte, duck breast, mushroom dishes, and hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended if drinking now to help the wine open up and show its full aromatic depth.
Producer
Château Charmail is a long-established estate in the Médoc and has earned a strong reputation for producing consistently elegant wines at very good value for the region. As a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, it stands among the notable classified estates outside Bordeaux’s 1855 ranking, reflecting both quality and credibility within the appellation. The château is appreciated for crafting wines that express the character of the Left Bank while remaining accessible in style.
