Description
Charles Heidsieck Champagne Charlie 2017 is a rare, collector-worthy cuvée from one of Champagne’s most revered historic houses. Reviving the legendary “Champagne Charlie” spirit, this bottling captures both the energy of the 2017 vintage and the house’s signature depth and precision. Crafted in limited quantities, it stands out as a refined, vertical style of Champagne with impressive tension, complexity and aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Champagne Charlie 2017 shows a luminous, pale golden hue with a fine, persistent bead of tiny bubbles that hints at its long maturation. The nose opens immediately with fresh, ripe apricot and the savoury richness of salted shortbread. With a little air, more complexity unfolds: notes of juicy, green citrus, grapefruit zest and a subtle touch of melted butter, all underpinned by a chalky, mineral lift.
On the palate, this Champagne is beautifully fresh and tightly wound at first, with a precise, linear attack that quickly broadens into layered depth. Ripe stone fruit and citrus are framed by a cool, mineral backbone and a delicate, creamy mousse. Hints of chalk, biscuit and subtle pastry tones add complexity without heaviness. The structure and acidity suggest excellent aging potential: while already compelling, this 2017 will continue to gain nuance and harmony over the next 8–15 years, developing more toast, brioche and nutty notes with time in the cellar.
Production
Sourced from carefully selected vineyards across Champagne—typically including a focus on chalk-rich sites—Champagne Charlie 2017 reflects the cool, mineral-driven terroir that defines Charles Heidsieck’s style. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity and purity of fruit, then gently pressed in small lots. The wine is crafted in the traditional méthode champenoise, with primary fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels and extended aging on the lees in the house’s historic chalk cellars. This prolonged maturation builds the fine mousse, creamy texture and layered complexity that are hallmarks of both the cuvée and the estate.
Food & Serving
Champagne Charlie 2017 is a superb partner for refined dishes such as poached lobster, scallops in a light citrus beurre blanc, turbot, or delicate poultry with a creamy sauce. Its freshness and minerality also make it an excellent match for oysters, caviar, sashimi or lightly aged hard cheeses. Serve well-chilled at around 9–11°C (48–52°F) to highlight its precision and aromatics. A brief decant of 10–15 minutes in a chilled carafe, or simply allowing it to open in the glass, can help reveal additional layers of fruit, mineral notes and complexity.
Producer
Founded in 1851 by the charismatic Charles-Camille Heidsieck—immortalised as “Champagne Charlie”—Charles Heidsieck is one of Champagne’s most storied and respected houses. Based in Reims, the estate is renowned for its deep, ancient crayère chalk cellars and a signature style defined by richness, elegance and long lees aging. Over the decades, Charles Heidsieck has earned a reputation among connoisseurs and critics alike for producing some of the region’s most consistently outstanding non-vintage and prestige cuvées. The revival of Champagne Charlie pays tribute to the founder’s pioneering spirit and cements the house’s position as a benchmark for classically crafted, ageworthy Champagne.
