Description

Champagne Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2015 in magnum is a commanding expression of one of Champagne’s most legendary single vineyards. This Extra-Brut cuvée marries impressive power with chalk-driven precision, offering a wine that is both deeply vinous and impeccably refined. From an outstanding warm vintage and bottled in large format, it promises a long, graceful evolution for collectors and serious Champagne lovers alike. Clos des Goisses is Philipponnat’s crown jewel: a steep, walled, south-facing vineyard that has defined the house style since the 1930s and is widely regarded as one of the finest terroirs in Champagne. The 2015 blend of 78% Pinot Noir and 22% Chardonnay, with a low dosage of 4.5 g/L and no malolactic fermentation, emphasizes structure, purity and length. This release already surpasses the acclaimed 2010 in concentration and depth, yet retains a classical, almost austere backbone that will reward patience.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Clos des Goisses shows a radiant, luminous golden hue with a fine, persistent bead that speaks to its intensity and long lees aging. The nose is generous yet tightly knit, opening with ripe pear and mirabelle plum, followed by layers of acacia honey, warm brioche and delicate baking spices. Subtle notes of iodine, chalk and a faint saline edge remind you instantly of its great hillside origin and proximity to the Marne. On the palate, this Champagne is full-bodied, concentrated and unapologetically vinous, with a firmly structured core. Ripe stone and orchard fruits are wrapped in a frame of fresh, vibrant acidity that keeps the wine taut and vertical. The mid-palate is dense and layered, hinting at hazelnut, light honeyed tones and delicate spice, while the finish is long, juicy and distinctly marked by a fine licorice note. Still a little strict in its youth, especially in this no-malo, low-dosage style, the 2015 Clos des Goisses in magnum has significant aging potential; it will easily develop and gain complexity over two to three decades, with the magnum format extending its life and preserving freshness even further.

Production
Clos des Goisses is a steep, 45-degree, south-facing, walled vineyard in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, planted on pure chalk with thin topsoil—a combination that delivers exceptional ripeness and concentration while preserving tension and minerality. The 2015 vintage, marked by warmth and excellent maturity, allowed Philipponnat to harvest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at optimal ripeness, entirely by hand, with strict sorting in the vineyard to select only the finest bunches. After gentle pressing of the 78% Pinot Noir and 22% Chardonnay, the base wines were vinified with a focus on preserving the character of the site, and no malolactic fermentation was carried out to maintain freshness and structure. The wine then underwent extended aging on its lees in bottle before disgorgement in March 2024, with a low Extra-Brut dosage of 4.5 g/L to highlight the precision, salinity and depth of this remarkable terroir.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Champagne that shines at the table. Its power and structure make it an ideal partner for lobster, turbot or other rich white fish, roasted poultry with jus, veal in cream or morel sauces, and dishes featuring truffle or wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Gruyère or Parmesan. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the full aromatic complexity to emerge. In its youth, especially from magnum, a short decant of 20–30 minutes or simply opening the bottle ahead of serving can help the wine unfurl, but it can equally be enjoyed evolving slowly in the glass over the course of a meal.

Producer
Champagne Philipponnat is one of the region’s historic houses, with roots in Champagne dating back to 1522 and a long-established base in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. While the domaine produces a range of highly regarded cuvées, it is Clos des Goisses that has cemented its reputation among connoisseurs; first bottled as a single-vineyard Champagne in 1935, it was one of the earliest and most influential prestige cuvées to champion terroir. Philipponnat is celebrated for its unapologetically vinous, gastronomic style, a strong emphasis on Pinot Noir and a deep respect for traditional methods, including careful vineyard work, low yields and long aging. Today, Clos des Goisses is widely regarded as one of Champagne’s grandest sites, and its wines are benchmark references for collectors seeking depth, longevity and a true sense of place.
