Description
Champagne Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2015 in DBMG (3 L) is a monumental expression of one of Champagne’s most legendary single vineyards. Bottled as an Extra-Brut, this cuvée marries power, precision and profound complexity, crafted for connoisseurs who appreciate Champagne with serious vinosity and a long life ahead. In the generous 3-liter format, it becomes an unforgettable centerpiece for the table and a benchmark bottle for any serious cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Clos des Goisses shows a luminous, intense golden hue with a fine, persistent bead that speaks to its concentration and long lees aging. The nose is rich and intricate, opening with ripe pear, mirabelle plum and perfectly mature orchard fruits, layered with notes of wildflower honey, brioche, delicate spice and a distinctive saline, almost iodized nuance that is a hallmark of this site.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, vinous and deeply structured, with an immediate sense of density and depth at the core. Flavors of ripe stone fruit, baked apple and citrus peel are interwoven with hints of toasted pastry, subtle licorice and chalky minerality. The acidity is fresh and incisive, cutting through the wine’s richness and giving it a poised, tightly wound profile at this stage. The finish is long, juicy and delicately bitter-saline, with a lingering licorice note. Still a touch firm and reserved in its youth, this 2015 has excellent aging potential; in this 3 L bottle, it will develop complexity and harmony over two to three decades, rewarding patience with added finesse and tertiary depth.
Production
Clos des Goisses is a steep, south-facing, walled vineyard in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, long recognized as one of Champagne’s warmest and most privileged terroirs. The site’s pure chalk subsoil and pronounced slope ensure superb drainage, excellent ripeness and a distinctive mineral drive in the wines. In 2015, a warm, sunny vintage, Philipponnat harvested exceptionally ripe Pinot Noir (78%) and Chardonnay (22%), all handpicked to preserve fruit integrity on this demanding incline. The musts were vinified with great care, and the wine did not undergo malolactic fermentation, preserving its bright, energetic acidity and capacity to age. Bottled as an Extra-Brut with a low dosage of 4.5 g/L, and disgorged in March 2024, this Clos des Goisses is crafted to express the vineyard’s natural concentration and power with utmost precision and purity.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Champagne best enjoyed at the table rather than as a simple aperitif. Its depth and structure make it a superb match for refined dishes such as lobster with beurre blanc, scallops with truffle, turbot or sole in rich cream sauces, roast poularde, veal sweetbreads, or a simple but luxurious roast chicken with morels. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses and delicate dishes featuring earthy or umami-rich elements. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the full aromatic range to emerge. Decanting 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially at this youthful stage, to help the wine open and soften its firm structure—an uncommon but highly rewarding practice for a Champagne of such vinosity.
Producer
Philipponnat is one of Champagne’s most respected historic houses, with roots in the region dating back to the 16th century. Based in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the family has long been associated with terroir-driven, Pinot Noir–focused Champagnes of depth and character. Clos des Goisses, acquired by the Philipponnat family in 1935, is widely regarded as one of the very first, and certainly most famous, single-vineyard Champagnes ever bottled, a site that helped redefine Champagne as a great still wine that happens to sparkle. Over the decades, Philipponnat has built a reputation for low-dosage, gastronomic cuvées and meticulous work in the vineyard and cellar, earning the house a place among the reference producers of the region and making Clos des Goisses one of Champagne’s most collectible and age-worthy wines.
