Description
Champagne Bardiau’s Besace Blanc de Noirs is a powerful, sharply defined Champagne made entirely from Pinot Noir grown on a single limestone parcel in the Côte des Bar. It captures the producer’s terroir-driven approach in its purest form: dry, elegant, and impressively expressive, with a style that feels both modern and deeply rooted in Champagne tradition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Besace shows the fine, luminous character expected of a high-level Blanc de Noirs, with a poised mousse and a precise, crystalline profile. The nose is distinctly Pinot-driven, opening with fresh red apple, dried rose petals, red currant, oyster shell, crushed walnuts, and a subtle hint of rye and apple pastry.
On the palate, it is intense yet surprisingly airy, combining a firm, chalky structure with vibrant acidity and a lightly bitter edge that adds real definition. Flavours of apple fudge, underripe raspberry, pickled grapefruit peel, crushed limestone, and almond macaron unfold into a long, electric finish. This is a Champagne with excellent ageing potential, especially for those who enjoy taut, mineral, ultra-dry styles.
Production
Besace comes from a single limestone parcel in the Côte des Bar, a southern Champagne subregion known for its chalky, Kimmeridgian and Portlandian soils that echo the terroir of nearby Chablis. Champagne Bardiau farms with sustainability in mind and works closely with its individual parcels to let site expression come through as clearly as possible. The wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir, fermented first in oak barrels, bottled in May 2018, then aged at least 36 months on the lees before receiving only 1 g/L of sugar, making it Extra Brut.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent Champagne for food, especially with richly flavoured seafood, shellfish, mushrooms, and rosé-roasted veal. Serve well chilled at around 8-10°C, and consider a brief decant only if you want to soften its more tightly wound structure; otherwise, it is best enjoyed straight from the bottle to preserve its freshness and drive.
Producer
Champagne Bardiau is based in the Côte des Bar, one of Champagne’s most dynamic areas for small, quality-focused producers. The house is part of a new wave of growers putting terroir and careful vineyard work at the centre of their winemaking, with certifications and practices that support sustainable viticulture. Their attention to individual parcels and restrained use of dosage has helped define a style that is precise, site-specific, and increasingly respected among Champagne enthusiasts.
