Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Armada Syrah shows a dense, opaque ruby to deep garnet core with a slightly inky rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is wonderfully complex and savory, with layers of black cherry, blackberry and plum intertwined with smoked meat, cracked pepper, iodine, olives, dried herbs, violets and a distinct earthy, ferrous minerality so characteristic of Cayuse. On the palate, this is medium to full‑bodied with remarkable balance and precision. Dark fruit flavors—blackberry, mulberry and black plum—are wrapped in notes of smoked bacon, leather, tapenade, black pepper and a subtle touch of cocoa and graphite. The tannins are ripe, fine‑grained and firmly structured, giving the wine a taut, layered mouthfeel that opens beautifully with air. Fresh acidity keeps everything lifted and savory, leading to a long, saline‑mineral finish. While already impressive with extended decanting, the 2018 has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 12–20 years, gaining even more complexity and nuance in bottle.

Production
Armada Syrah comes from the famed Armada Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley, planted at high density on the region’s distinctive cobblestone riverbed soils. These well‑drained, rocky sites naturally limit yields and stress the vines, resulting in small, concentrated berries that deliver remarkable intensity and minerality. Farmed using organic and largely biodynamic principles, the vineyard is worked by hand from pruning to harvest. Grapes are picked relatively early to preserve freshness and are carefully sorted before fermentation, which often includes a significant proportion of whole clusters to enhance aromatic complexity, structure and savory spice. The wine is then aged in mostly neutral French oak barrels, allowing the vineyard character—rather than heavy new oak—to take center stage, and is bottled with minimal intervention to retain purity and authenticity.

Food & Serving
This is a superb food wine, particularly with rich, savory dishes. Think roasted lamb with herbs, duck confit, grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, game birds, mushroom ragù, or dishes laced with olives, smoked bacon or black pepper. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses and charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatics and texture. For current drinking, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the wine to unfurl its layers; as it ages, 60–90 minutes of decanting will usually be sufficient to bring out its full complexity.
