Description
Castello di Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva is a classic Tuscan red with real depth, combining the finesse of Sangiovese with a layered, structured style shaped by one of Chianti Rufina’s most historic estates. From the hills north-east of Florence, it reflects both the elegance and the longevity that have made Nipozzano a benchmark name in the region for centuries.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby-red color with bright youthful highlights. The nose opens with intense red berries, ripe citrus, violet, and a spicy thread of licorice and clove. On the palate, it is dense and fresh, with well-integrated tannins, a long savory finish, and a clear sense of tension and balance.
This Riserva is built to age well, developing additional complexity over the next several years. With bottle time, its fruit will soften and give way to more earthy, balsamic, and tertiary notes, making it especially rewarding for those who enjoy structured Tuscan reds with evolution in the cellar.
Production
The wine comes from the Nipozzano area in the Chianti Rufina zone, where the hilly landscape and cooler exposures help preserve freshness while giving the grapes the structure and resilience needed for long aging. The estate has been active since the 14th century, and the vineyards benefit from a historically respected terroir with strong territorial identity. Harvest takes place in September, and each grape variety is vinified separately before blending.
Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks over about 13 days, followed by around 25 days of maceration with regular pump-overs to extract color, aroma, and tannin. Malolactic fermentation is completed in steel, after which the wine matures for 25 months in barrels, then spends additional time in bottle and cellar before release.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent partner for grilled red meats, roast lamb, game, and aged cheeses, where its structure and freshness can stand up to rich flavors. Serve it at 16–18°C, and decant for about 1 hour if possible, especially in its younger years, to let the aromas and texture fully open.
Producer
Castello Nipozzano is part of the historic Frescobaldi family, one of Tuscany’s most important wine producers and a name deeply tied to Florence’s winemaking heritage. The estate at Nipozzano has roots going back to the 1300s and is widely recognized as a leading expression of Chianti Rufina. Under the Frescobaldi label, it has earned a strong reputation for quality and consistency, with wines that often receive high critical praise for their balance, refinement, and sense of place.
