Description
Castello di Collemassari’s Irisse Vermentino Montecucco DOC 2023 is a richly textured Tuscan white that brings together ripe fruit, subtle oak influence, and vibrant freshness in one polished package. Crafted from Vermentino with a touch of Grechetto, it reflects the balance and elegance that have made ColleMassari one of the standout producers in the Montecucco area.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw in the glass, the wine shows a generous and inviting bouquet of ripe peach, apricot, juicy pear, white flowers, and a hint of almond. With air, more layered notes emerge, including grapefruit, passion fruit, wild herbs, white pepper, wet stone, anise, and a delicate touch of vanilla.
On the palate, Irisse is full-bodied, floral, and creamy in feel, with ripe stone fruit wrapped around a lively, well-integrated acidity. The oak aging adds depth and finesse without overshadowing the fruit, giving the wine a long, juicy, and refreshing finish. It has the structure to evolve nicely over the next few years, while still offering plenty of charm now.
Production
The grapes come from vineyards situated at around 300 meters above sea level in Montecucco, where the soils of sandstone, marble, and clay help shape the wine’s mineral edge and broad, expressive style. The blend is composed of 85% Vermentino and 15% Grechetto, with Grechetto adding body and volume to the final wine.
Harvested from carefully tended hillside vines, the wine is fermented in large casks and then aged for 12 months in small oak barrels, followed by a further 6 months of bottle rest before release. This production approach gives Irisse its distinctive combination of ripe fruit, creamy texture, and precise freshness.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for rich seafood dishes, especially roasted scallops, langoustines, or other shellfish served with celery purée and shaved fennel. It also pairs beautifully with roast poultry, creamy sauces, and Mediterranean dishes with herbs and citrus. Serve chilled at around 10-12°C; decanting is not necessary, though a short splash in the glass can help open up its aromatic complexity.
Producer
Castello di ColleMassari is a top estate in Tuscany’s Montecucco zone, known for producing characterful wines that combine regional authenticity with modern precision.
