Description

Castello di Ama Il Chiuso Pinot Nero 2022 is a refined and expressive Tuscan take on one of the world’s most noble grape varieties. Planted with Burgundian clones and nurtured in the cool San Lorenzo valley, this wine marries Pinot Nero’s elegance with the subtle warmth and structure of Tuscany. First created in the 2009 season, Il Chiuso has quickly become a sought‑after cuvée for those who enjoy finely etched, terroir‑driven reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Il Chiuso 2022 shows a luminous, medium ruby hue with delicate garnet reflections at the rim. The nose is precise and layered, opening with wild strawberries, red cherries and raspberries, followed by violets, rose petals and hints of blood orange. Gentle undertones of white pepper, dried herbs, and a touch of wet stone add complexity and lift. On the palate, this Pinot Nero is vibrant and finely textured, with a graceful, medium body and beautifully integrated acidity. Crunchy red berry fruit is supported by subtle notes of pomegranate, cranberry and a faint whisper of spice and earth, reflecting its clay‑limestone soils. The tannins are supple and silk‑fine, giving the wine a very pure, linear feel and a long, savory finish. Enjoyable now for its energy and freshness, Il Chiuso 2022 will continue to evolve nicely over the next 5–7 years, gaining further nuance and complexity in bottle.

Production
Il Chiuso comes from a single Pinot Nero vineyard planted in 1984 along the San Lorenzo valley at Castello di Ama, covering just over 4 hectares. The site’s clay‑ and limestone‑rich soils, combined with its elevation and cooling breezes, provide ideal conditions for slow, even ripening and aromatic precision. Burgundian clones (111, 114 and 115) were chosen specifically for their finesse and ability to express terroir. The vines are trained using the Open Lyre system, which optimizes sun exposure and air circulation, helping the grapes reach perfect maturity while retaining freshness. Harvest is typically carried out by hand in small crates, with careful selection of bunches in the vineyard and at the cellar door. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled vessels to preserve delicate aromas, followed by maturation—often in a proportion of used French oak—to round the structure and add subtle complexity without masking the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
Il Chiuso Pinot Nero 2022 is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with refined yet subtly flavored dishes. Try it with roast chicken, duck breast, veal scaloppine or pork tenderloin, as well as mushroom risotto, truffle‑infused pastas, and mild to medium‑aged cheeses such as Taleggio or Fontina. It also works well with Tuscan charcuterie and herb‑roasted vegetables. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its aromatic precision and silk‑textured palate. A short decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, but it can also be enjoyed directly after opening with a bit of time in the glass.

Producer
Castello di Ama is one of Tuscany’s most acclaimed estates, located in the heart of Chianti Classico near the village of Gaiole. The property has been cultivated since medieval times, but its modern renaissance began in the 1970s, when a visionary team set out to produce wines that could stand alongside the world’s finest. Today, Castello di Ama is recognized for its meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and a philosophy that places terroir expression above all else. While best known for its benchmark Sangiovese‑based Chianti Classico and single‑vineyard crus, the estate has also gained a strong reputation for its limited‑production wines like Il Chiuso, which showcase how international varieties can convey the character of Tuscan soils. Numerous high scores and critical accolades over the years have secured Castello di Ama’s position as a reference point in the region.
