Castello del Terriccio Tassinaia 2023 is a structured Tuscan red blending Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, combining fresh, generous fruit with elegant tannins and a distinctive mineral thread. Its name means “place of stones,” a reference to the stony soils of the estate’s historic vineyards in the Maremma.
Tasting Notes
Expect a deep ruby-red appearance, with aromas of sour cherry and wild berries layered with sweet spice, vanilla and notes reminiscent of Mediterranean scrub. The palate is fresh yet full-bodied, shaped by precise, elegant tannins and a mineral character that leads into a persistent finish.
The wine’s structure should allow it to develop in bottle. The supplied information gives an indicative aging potential of 10–15 years, with cellaring under suitable conditions.
Production
The vineyards lie in the Tuscan Maremma, near Castellina Marittima, at 100–300 metres above sea level, with mainly south- and southwest-facing exposures. Vines are trained using the Guyot method with short spurs in stony, fossil-rich soils. Merlot is harvested by hand first, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon in September. After gentle crushing and destemming, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel, with pump-overs and délestage to aid extraction. The wines mature separately for 14–16 months in Allier oak barrels, some previously used once, before blending and further bottle ageing.
Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C. Its ripe fruit and firm structure make it a natural match for grilled or roasted red meats, lamb, game and aged hard cheeses. Consider opening it an hour or two before serving, or decanting gently to let the aromas unfold, especially if enjoying it young.
Producer
Castello del Terriccio is an estate in Tuscany’s Maremma whose history of quality production dates back to 1921. Its wines are associated with the region’s distinctive coastal-influenced setting and varied, stony soils. The estate has received notable recognition, including Gambero Rosso’s Tre Bicchieri and Bibenda’s Cinque Grappoli; these accolades refer to the estate’s wines and should not be taken as specific awards for the 2023 vintage.
