Castello Banfi’s Poggio alle Mura Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019 is a distinguished expression of Sangiovese from one of Tuscany’s most renowned estates. Produced only in exceptional vintages, it combines the elegance and savoury complexity of Brunello with the added depth and ageing potential expected of a Riserva. The wine takes its name from the historic Poggio alle Mura castle, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour with garnet reflections, this Brunello opens with an expressive bouquet of ripe black cherry, plum and violet, followed by notes of tobacco, cedar, sweet spice and subtle balsamic nuance. On the palate, it is full-bodied and well structured, with concentrated dark-fruit flavours supported by refined oak, lively acidity and firm yet polished tannins. The finish is long, savoury and persistent, revealing hints of leather, spice and mineral complexity.
The 2019 vintage offers excellent balance between power and freshness. It is approachable with decanting, but will continue to develop beautifully in bottle for many years—around 15 to 20 years under suitable cellaring conditions.
Production
The grapes are sourced from Banfi’s estate vineyards in the southern part of Montalcino, where warm days, cool nights and varied soils help Sangiovese achieve both concentration and aromatic freshness. The fruit is carefully selected and harvested at optimum ripeness before fermentation and extended maceration to extract colour, flavour and structure. As a Riserva, the wine receives extended maturation in oak before further bottle ageing, allowing the fruit, tannins and oak character to integrate into a complex and harmonious whole.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 18°C in a large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glass. Decant for one to two hours when serving now, particularly with a mature dish, while older bottles may benefit from gentle decanting shortly before serving. Its structure and savoury character make it an excellent partner for Tuscan specialities, braised beef, wild boar ragù, roasted lamb, game birds, truffle dishes and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Founded in 1978 by the Mariani family, Castello Banfi has become one of the most influential modern estates in Montalcino. The estate surrounds the historic Poggio alle Mura castle and is recognised for combining meticulous vineyard management with advanced winemaking and a strong respect for Tuscan tradition. Banfi played an important role in raising the international profile of Brunello di Montalcino and has received widespread critical recognition for the quality and consistency of its wines.
