Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Tenuta Nuova is deep garnet with a dark, almost inky core, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose opens with an intense, layered bouquet of ripe black cherry and blackberry compote, followed by roasted spices, licorice, star anise, and a touch of ink and graphite. Subtle notes of cocoa, cedar, and balsamic herbs emerge with air, giving the wine both depth and complexity. On the palate, this is a powerful yet finely sculpted Brunello, with dense, polished fruit wrapped around a firm, grippy tannic backbone. Flavors of black plum, blackberry, and dark cherry are interwoven with espresso, tobacco, dried violets, and savory spice. The structure is robust but beautifully balanced by fresh acidity, carrying the wine through a long, persistent finish with notes of dark chocolate and exotic spice. Production
Tenuta Nuova is sourced from meticulously selected vineyards on the southeastern side of Montalcino, where a mix of galestro (friable schist), clay, and stony soils, combined with good elevation and exposure, gives naturally concentrated yet finely etched Sangiovese (Brunello). The grapes are typically hand-harvested in small crates at optimal ripeness, with strict sorting to ensure only the healthiest bunches make it into the fermenters. Vinification usually involves temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel or concrete, with a careful maceration to extract color, aroma, and tannin without harshness. The wine is then aged for about 30 months in French oak tonneaux, which lends texture and complexity while preserving the purity of fruit and the character of the Brunello terroir, before further refinement in bottle prior to release. Total production of the 2019 vintage is precisely 69,696 bottles.
