Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Giovanni Neri 2019 is a strikingly elegant expression of Brunello, created as a tribute to Giacomo Neri’s father and the estate’s founder, Giovanni Neri. Now in only its second vintage, this cuvée represents a subtle stylistic shift toward the most refined, lifted side of Montalcino. It balances power and grace with impressive nuance, offering a Brunello that is both deeply characterful today and clearly built for the long haul.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Giovanni Neri shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with garnet reflections forming at the rim, signaling both concentration and classic Brunello typicity. The nose is layered and expressive, opening with roasted cherry pit, black and sour cherries, and a touch of Luxardo maraschino syrup. With air, more complex aromas unfold: wild herbs and balsamic notes, hints of dried rose and lilac, along with dark slate, flinty mineral tones and a refined earthiness that feels very true to Montalcino’s hillside vineyards. On the palate, the wine is precise and supple, with sweet-edged, fine-grained tannins that are unusually polished for such a young Brunello. Ripe red and black cherry, blood orange peel and spicy plum are framed by savory undertones of tobacco leaf, licorice, and graphite. The texture is silky yet firmly structured, with a beautifully judged balance between fruit, tannin, and fresh acidity. The finish is long and perfumed, echoing with rose petal, herbs, and mineral grip. This 2019 has excellent aging potential; it will develop more tertiary complexity over 12–20 years and likely drink beautifully well beyond that in proper cellaring conditions.

Production
The Giovanni Neri Brunello is crafted from 100% Sangiovese (Brunello) sourced from some of Casanova di Neri’s finest parcels around Montalcino, where a mix of galestro, limestone, and stony soils contributes to the wine’s tension, perfume, and mineral backbone. The vineyards sit on well-exposed slopes with significant day–night temperature variation, helping the grapes retain aromatic complexity and freshness. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness with strict bunch selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with careful extraction to preserve finesse rather than sheer power, followed by élevage in large oak (and carefully selected barrels) for an extended period to polish the tannins without masking the purity of fruit and terroir. The wine is then further refined in bottle before release, with total production limited to around 9,600 bottles.

Food & Serving
This Brunello is superb alongside classic Tuscan dishes: bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised lamb, wild boar ragù, or pappardelle with truffle and porcini. It also pairs beautifully with roasted game birds, veal shank, and aged hard cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux stems to highlight its aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps the wine fully open, while older bottles will benefit from a more gentle, shorter decant just to remove sediment and awaken the bouquet.
