Description
Carpinus Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos 2016 is a classic Hungarian dessert wine made from carefully selected botrytis-affected grapes from Tokaj, one of the world’s most iconic sweet wine regions. Richly expressive yet beautifully balanced, it combines historical prestige with the pure, intense character that has long made Tokaji Aszú a benchmark for noble sweet wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the depth and brightness expected from top Tokaji Aszú, with layers of apricot jam, orange zest, and ripe tropical fruit. The nose is generous and lifted, while the palate is creamy, sweet, and fresh, carrying concentrated fruit through to a long, mineral finish.
The wine’s natural acidity keeps the sweetness in check, giving it excellent balance and impressive energy. With its intensity and structure, it should age gracefully for many years, developing further complexity and nuance over time.
Production
This wine comes from Tokaj in northeastern Hungary, where the local microclimate encourages the development of noble rot, or botrytis cinerea, late in the season. That dehydration of the grapes concentrates sugars, flavor, and acidity, creating the distinctive richness and precision of Tokaji Aszú.
Carpinus ferments and matures the wine for 24 months in 220-liter Hungarian oak barrels, adding subtle spice and texture without overpowering the fruit. The finished wine has 165 grams of residual sugar, 8.1 grams of acidity, and 11% alcohol, resulting in a finely judged expression of the style.
Food & Serving
Serve this wine lightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, with no need for decanting. It pairs beautifully with fruit-based desserts, tarte tatin, crème brûlée, blue cheese, foie gras, or simply enjoyed on its own as a luxurious after-dinner wine.
Producer
Carpinus is a Tokaj producer dedicated to showcasing the region’s historic sweet wine tradition through carefully crafted, terroir-driven wines. By working with noble rot-affected fruit and traditional ageing in Hungarian oak, the estate contributes to the ongoing reputation of Tokaj as one of the great dessert wine regions of the world.
