Description

Carlo Viglione Barolo Bussia 2018 is a classic expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s most revered crus, Bussia. This wine brings together the power and structure typical of the vineyard with an elegant, finely etched style that rewards unhurried enjoyment. Crafted in small quantities, it captures the character of a great site in a balanced, approachable vintage. The unique selling point here is its combination of top-tier Barolo terroir and artisan, small-scale production, offering serious quality without the formality of the big-name estates. Expect precise fruit, layered complexity and a refined tannic backbone that marks it as a wine built for the table and for the cellar. Bussia has long been considered one of Barolo’s benchmark areas, and this 2018 bottling continues that tradition with a modern, terroir-focused interpretation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Carlo Viglione Barolo Bussia 2018 shows a luminous garnet core with orange-tinged rims, typical of well-made Nebbiolo. The nose opens gradually with aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant and wild strawberry, followed by floral notes of rose petal and violet, and subtle hints of tar, licorice, tobacco leaf and sweet spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a poised, linear structure. Fine yet firmly grained tannins wrap around flavours of sour cherry, blood orange, pomegranate and red plum, backed by notes of leather, truffle, cedar and a gentle mineral edge. The acidity is vibrant, giving the wine lift and length while keeping it fresh and food-friendly. 2018 is a more accessible vintage in Barolo, so this Bussia is already enjoyable with a proper decant, yet it has the structure to evolve beautifully. Expect an optimal drinking window from now through the next 10–15 years, with tertiary notes of mushroom, dried herbs and forest floor becoming more prominent over time.

Production
Sourced from the Bussia cru in the Barolo appellation of Piedmont, this wine reflects a classic mix of calcareous clay and marl soils that give Nebbiolo its hallmark perfume and tension. The vineyard’s elevation and exposure provide excellent diurnal shifts, helping to ripen the grapes fully while preserving acidity and aromatic nuance. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only healthy, perfectly ripe bunches are used. In the cellar, a traditional Barolo approach is followed: extended maceration on the skins to extract colour, tannin and flavour, followed by a long, gentle fermentation. The wine is then matured—often in large, neutral oak casks or a mix of traditional botti and older barriques—to allow the Nebbiolo character and the Bussia terroir to shine without overt oak influence, before being bottled and rested further prior to release.

Food & Serving
Carlo Viglione Barolo Bussia 2018 is a natural partner for rich, savoury dishes and classic northern Italian cuisine. Think braised beef or veal, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb shanks, wild game, truffle risotto, mushroom tagliatelle, or mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and aged Pecorino. The wine shows best at 16–18°C; serve slightly cooler than room temperature so the aromatics can unfurl in the glass as it warms. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open the bouquet, especially if enjoyed within the first few years after release.

Producer
Carlo Viglione is a smaller, quality-focused producer in Piedmont, working with some of the region’s most prized sites to craft terroir-driven wines with a strong sense of place. Rooted in Barolo tradition, the estate emphasises careful vineyard work, hand-harvesting and a restrained, authentic style in the cellar, allowing Nebbiolo to express its full aromatic and structural potential. While not among the largest or flashiest names in the region, Carlo Viglione has built a reputation for dependable, well-crafted wines that reflect the nuances of their individual crus, such as Bussia, and offer excellent value for serious Barolo drinkers.
