Description
Caprili Brunello di Montalcino 2019 in magnum format is a classic expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most quietly confident traditionalists. The larger 1.5 L bottle gives this already impressive wine an extra edge in finesse and longevity, making it ideal for the cellar or a special occasion. This 2019 release stands out for its purity of cherry fruit and impeccable balance, even after five years of maturation before release.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Brunello shows a deep, luminous ruby core with garnet reflections toward the rim, hinting at both concentration and elegance. The nose is immediately inviting, with pristine red and black cherry, wild strawberry and plum layered over notes of dried rose, blood orange peel, sweet tobacco, and a subtle chalky, mineral edge. Hints of cedar, anise, and dried herbs emerge with air, underlining the wine’s complexity.
On the palate, this Brunello is silky yet structured, with that “velvety richness” the vintage is known for at Caprili. The core of ripe cherry and red berries is framed by fine, chalky tannins and a lively, savory acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. Hints of pomegranate, spice box, leather and a faint earthy note linger on the long, mouthwatering finish. Already harmonious and approachable, especially from magnum, it nonetheless has the structure to evolve beautifully for 12–20 years or more under good cellaring conditions, with the larger format further extending its aging potential.
Production
Caprili’s vineyards lie in the southwestern zone of Montalcino, near Sant’Angelo in Colle, where warm days, cool nights and well-drained, limestone-rich soils help Sangiovese (Sangiovese Grosso) achieve both ripeness and refined structure. Grapes for the Brunello are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly mature fruit makes it into the winery. Vinification follows a traditional approach: fermentation in stainless steel with native or carefully selected yeasts, followed by a long maceration to gently extract color, aroma and fine tannin. The wine is then aged for several years in large Slavonian oak casks, a method that respects the character of the fruit and terroir rather than imposing heavy oak flavors, before further bottle aging and eventual release—here in the more age-worthy magnum format.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for rich, savory Tuscan-inspired dishes—think bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted or grilled lamb, braised beef, wild boar ragù, or game birds. It also shines with truffle pasta, porcini risotto, and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18 °C (60–64 °F) for optimal expression. From magnum, decanting for 1.5–2 hours in its youth helps the wine open and soften the tannins; as it ages, a shorter, gentle decant to remove sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Caprili is a family-run estate founded in 1965 in the southwestern part of Montalcino, an area now recognized for producing some of the region’s most characterful Brunello. With vineyards overlooking the Orcia Valley and rooted in limestone and marl, Caprili has long favored a traditional style: Sangiovese harvested by hand, fermented with care, and aged in large Slavonian botti to preserve purity and terroir. Over the last two decades, the estate has steadily gained a reputation as one of Montalcino’s rising stars, regularly earning strong critical praise for wines that combine authenticity, typicity and outstanding value within the Brunello di Montalcino appellation.
