Château Calon-Ségur 2015 is a classic Saint-Estèphe with the estate’s hallmark combination of power, structure and remarkable longevity. Classified as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, the château is instantly recognisable by its heart motif—a reference to the Marquis de Calon’s famous declaration that his heart would remain in Saint-Estèphe.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red with youthful garnet highlights, the wine opens with an expressive bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by cedar, tobacco, graphite and subtle floral notes. The 2015 vintage brings generous fruit and aromatic intensity while retaining the firm, savoury character associated with Saint-Estèphe.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, with ripe but authoritative tannins, refreshing acidity and a long, mineral finish. Dark berry fruit gradually gives way to hints of spice, cigar box and earth. Although approachable with decanting, this is a wine with considerable ageing potential and should develop further complexity over the next 15–25 years, depending on storage conditions.
Production
The vineyards of Calon-Ségur are shaped by the gravelly Médoc terroir of Saint-Estèphe, with well-drained gravel soils over clay that help retain moisture and support slow, even ripening. The 2015 blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Grapes are carefully selected and fermented parcel by parcel before maturation in French oak, allowing the wine to develop depth and polish while preserving its distinctive structure and mineral freshness.
Food & Serving
Its robust structure makes it an excellent partner for roast or grilled beef, rack of lamb, venison and other game dishes. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-seasoned dishes, mushroom sauces and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C and decant for 1–2 hours when drinking now; older bottles may benefit from gentler decanting to separate any sediment without unnecessarily exposing the wine to air.
Producer
Château Calon-Ségur is one of the historic estates of Saint-Estèphe and takes its name from the old French word “calon,” a small river boat once used to transport timber along the Gironde. Its distinctive heart emblem and consistently age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon-led wines have made the estate one of the appellation’s most recognisable producers. As a Troisième Grand Cru Classé, Calon-Ségur holds an important place in the 1855 classification and remains renowned for wines of depth, precision and exceptional cellaring potential.
