Description
Calon Segur 2022 is a poised and beautifully sculpted red from one of Saint-Estèphe’s most storied estates in Bordeaux. Classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Classification, this grand vin is renowned for its depth, grace, and remarkable aging capacity. The 2022 vintage, marked by a warm and dry growing season, has yielded a wine of impressive concentration, refined structure, and classic Left Bank character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Calon Segur 2022 shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, hinting at both youth and intensity. The nose is finely layered and expressive, with notes of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry, and plum interwoven with cedar, graphite, violets, and a subtle touch of tobacco and dark chocolate. Hints of graphite and crushed stone underscore its Saint-Estèphe origins.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a beautiful balance between ripe fruit and precise tannic structure. Silky yet firm tannins frame flavors of cassis, wild berries, and black plum, supported by nuances of pencil lead, spice, and a gentle oak polish. The acidity is fresh and well-judged, keeping the wine lifted and energetic. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering dark fruit and mineral notes that suggest excellent cellaring potential. Enjoyable in its youth with proper aeration, this 2022 Calon Segur will truly shine after 8–10 years of bottle age and has the capacity to evolve gracefully for two to three decades in a good cellar.
Production
Calon Segur is situated in the northern Médoc, in the heart of Saint-Estèphe, where deep gravelly soils over clay and limestone help produce Cabernet Sauvignon of great definition and longevity. The 2022 vintage is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a touch of Petit Verdot, though the precise blend may vary slightly each year. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, often by hand, to preserve berry integrity and selection quality. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to balance power and finesse. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (with a significant proportion new) for an extended period, allowing the tannins to integrate and the aromatic complexity to build while respecting the purity of fruit that defines the vintage.
Food & Serving
Calon Segur 2022 is a classic partner for refined yet flavorful dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef ribeye, venison, or slow-braised dishes such as beef cheeks or lamb shank. It also complements game birds, truffled poultry, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatics and structure. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully; older bottles will benefit from a more delicate, shorter decant to remove sediment and gently awaken the wine.
Producer
Château Calon Ségur is one of the oldest and most cherished estates in Saint-Estèphe, with viticultural roots dating back to the 12th century. The château gained particular renown in the 18th century under the ownership of the famous Marquis de Ségur—who also owned Lafite and Latour—and who famously declared that, though he made wine at those great estates, his heart belonged to Calon. This sentiment lives on in the estate’s iconic heart-shaped label. Today, Calon Segur is recognized as one of the leading properties in Saint-Estèphe, consistently producing wines that combine classic Médoc structure with elegance and longevity. Significant investments in the vineyards and cellar over recent decades have further elevated quality, placing Calon Segur among the most sought-after classed growths of the Left Bank.
