Description
Calon Segur 2021 is a classically styled, finely sculpted red Bordeaux from one of Saint-Estèphe’s most historic estates. In this vintage, the wine balances dark, seductive fruit with lifted florals and vibrant acidity, capturing the château’s signature elegance in a fresher, more precise frame. As a 3rd Growth Grand Cru Classé, Calon Segur is prized for its ability to age gracefully while remaining approachable in its youth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Calon Segur 2021 shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with a youthful purple rim, hinting at its energy and aging potential. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with aromas of dark berries—blackcurrant, blackberry, and mulberry—intertwined with notes of violet, lilac, and a touch of graphite and pencil shavings. Subtle hints of Indian spices, cigar wrapper, grilled meat, and a whisper of cedar and smoke add complexity as it unfolds in the glass.
On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied wine that feels poised and refined rather than heavy. The attack is fresh and juicy, with lively acidity framing ripe black fruit and redcurrant notes. Fine, powdery tannins provide structure without harshness, guiding the wine into a long, penetrating finish where subtle savory tones, a discreet meaty nuance, and spice linger. While already compelling and surprisingly accessible with proper aeration, the 2021 clearly has the structure to evolve beautifully over the next 10–20 years, gaining further aromatic precision and complexity with time in bottle.
Production
Calon Segur 2021 comes from the gravelly, clay-rich terroirs of Saint-Estèphe in the northern Médoc, a zone that typically gives Cabernet Sauvignon its firm backbone and distinctive mineral edge. The vineyard is planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, allowing for a classic Left Bank blend. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, often by hand, to preserve intact, healthy fruit. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to respect the vintage’s finesse and freshness rather than sheer power. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where it gains additional texture, aromatic depth, and refinement before bottling.
Food & Serving
Calon Segur 2021 is a superb partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef ribeye, duck breast, or veal with wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffled poultry, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda, as well as earthy lentil or mushroom-based dishes for a more casual setting. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. Young bottles benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; as it gains bottle age, a shorter decant mainly to remove sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Calon-Ségur is one of the most storied estates in Saint-Estèphe, classified as a 3ème Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Its heart-shaped label and long history—once associated with the famed Marquis de Ségur, who also owned Latour and Lafite—have made it something of a connoisseur’s favorite, known for soulful, age-worthy wines that remain distinctly Médocain in character. Over the last decades, significant investment in the vineyard and cellar has elevated quality even further, and recent vintages have drawn consistent critical acclaim for their precision, depth, and elegance. Today, Calon-Ségur is regarded as one of the benchmark estates of Saint-Estèphe, combining tradition, terroir expression, and modern craftsmanship in each bottle.
