Tasting Notes
In the glass, Calon Ségur 2020 shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, hinting at its intensity and youth. The nose is expressive and layered, with vivid aromas of blackcurrant and red berries intertwined with fresh mint, violet, rose petal, graphite and a subtle pencil shavings note, all wrapped in fine, cedary spice. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied yet wonderfully poised, with a vibrant core of dark fruit framed by powdery, structuring tannins. The texture is refined and silky, with impressive depth that unfolds gradually, revealing notes of cassis, wild raspberry, subtle tobacco and delicate floral tones. The finish is long, fragrant and persistent, leaving a lingering impression of freshness and perfume. While already beautifully integrated and harmonious in its youth, this 2020 has the concentration and structure to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
Calon Ségur lies in the northern Médoc appellation of Saint-Estèphe, where gravelly, well-drained soils over clay and limestone subsoils lend power, freshness and a distinctive mineral backbone to the wines. The estate’s vineyards are planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot, all cultivated with meticulous parcel-by-parcel attention. Hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, the grapes are carefully sorted before vinification in temperature-controlled vats, allowing gentle extraction to preserve purity and finesse. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new), where it gains further complexity, polish and structure before bottling.

Food & Serving
This 2020 Calon Ségur is a superb partner for classic, richly flavoured dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, venison, beef bourguignon or braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffled poultry, mushroom-based dishes and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or matured Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for best expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps the wine open up aromatically and soften the tannins; older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant to remove sediment while preserving delicate tertiary nuances.
