Description
Calon Ségur 2017 is a refined, classically styled Saint-Estèphe that shows just how elegant this once-powerful château has become in recent years. Combining depth, precision and freshness, it offers serious Médoc structure wrapped in beautifully polished tannins. One of the oldest estates in Bordeaux, Calon Ségur has been renowned since the 18th century, famously celebrated by the Marquis de Ségur, who declared that his heart belonged to Calon.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Calon Ségur is a deep garnet-purple with a youthful, inky core and a bright, vibrant rim. The nose opens gradually, moving from dark, brooding cassis and black cherry into more lifted notes of redcurrant, crushed violets, cedar, graphite and warm earth, with hints of cocoa, tobacco leaf and a subtle toast from the new French oak.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a cool, classical Saint-Estèphe profile: concentrated blackcurrant, blackberry and plum framed by finely grained, chalky tannins. A lively, mineral-driven acidity carries flavors of cassis, black cherry, graphite, pencil shavings and a touch of cigar box through a long, savory finish. Still youthful and a little reserved, it will reward patience; the structure and freshness suggest an aging window of 10–25 years from vintage, with the wine entering a particularly attractive drinking phase from around 2025 onward.
Production
Calon Ségur lies at the northern end of the Médoc, in Saint-Estèphe, on deep gravel mounds over clay and limestone that naturally favor Cabernet Sauvignon and lend both power and a distinctive mineral spine. The 2017 blend is built on approximately 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, all hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. After a rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the winery, the grapes are vinified in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity and precision of fruit. The wine then ages for around 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels, allowing the tannins to polish and the complex aromatics to knit together without overpowering the estate’s signature elegance.
Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for classic, richly flavored dishes: think roasted lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, slow-braised beef cheeks, confit duck, or game birds with truffle jus. It also pairs beautifully with earthy components such as wild mushrooms, lentils, and celeriac purée, and with aged hard cheeses like Comté, Mimolette or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F); if opened in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics and texture to open. For bottles with more age, a gentle 30–60 minute decant is sufficient to separate the wine from any sediment and let its tertiary complexity emerge.
Producer
Château Calon Ségur is one of the historic names of the Médoc, classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Classification and tracing its roots back to the Middle Ages. Its fame truly blossomed in the 18th century under Nicolas-Alexandre, Marquis de Ségur—who also owned Lafite and Latour—yet claimed his heart was at Calon, inspiring the estate’s iconic heart-shaped label. Situated in Saint-Estèphe’s northern reaches, Calon Ségur has long been known for producing structured, ageworthy wines; in recent decades, significant investment in the cellars and vineyards has brought greater precision and finesse without sacrificing depth. Today it is widely regarded as one of the leading estates of Saint-Estèphe, consistently crafting some of the appellation’s most collectible and long-lived wines.
