Description

Calera Ryan Vineyard Pinot Noir 2011 is a dark, intensely flavored expression of Pinot Noir from one of California’s most distinctive cool-climate sites. Sourced from Ryan Vineyard, planted in 1998 on Mount Harlan, it shows the mineral-driven character for which the area is known, paired with the depth and structure that have made Calera a benchmark producer in the region.

Tasting Notes
The wine is almost inky in color, signaling a more powerful style of Pinot Noir than many expect from the grape. Aromatically, it opens generously with dark plum, black cherry, cloudberry, violet, and sandalwood, giving it both richness and perfume. On the palate, the dark fruit carries through with added layers of licorice and nutmeg, supported by a firm, savory mineral thread. It is approachable now, but the structure and concentration suggest excellent aging potential, with the ability to develop gracefully for another 15 years or more.

Production
Ryan Vineyard was planted in 1998 on Mount Harlan, where the cool climate and mineral-rich soils contribute to the wine’s distinctive tension and depth. For this vintage, 70% of the clusters were fermented whole, adding complexity and structure, before the wine spent 20 months aging in French oak, 30% of which was new.

Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with duck, roast game bird, mushroom dishes, and herb-crusted pork, as well as more savory preparations with earthy root vegetables. Serve slightly cool, ideally around 15–17°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes to allow the wine’s aromas and texture to open fully.

Producer
Calera, founded by Josh Jensen, is one of California’s most respected Pinot Noir producers and has played an important role in proving the potential of cool-climate, limestone-driven sites in the state. The winery’s Mount Harlan vineyards, including Ryan Vineyard, have earned a strong reputation for producing Pinot Noirs with both elegance and serious age-worthiness.
