Description

Calera Mills Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012 is a striking example of California Pinot Noir with a Burgundian soul, grown on the limestone-rich slopes of Mount Harlan. Elegant yet deeply expressive, it combines intensity, freshness, and a sense of place that has long set Calera apart in American Pinot Noir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a graceful, polished appearance typical of mature Pinot Noir. The bouquet is layered and inviting, with dark cherry, strawberry, clove, thyme, sage, and a subtle cocoa note leading the way. The palate is vivid and complex, unfolding with blackcurrant, dark plum, and cloudberry, followed by earthy mushroom, black pepper, and a hint of grilled tomato. It has the structure and balance to age beautifully for years, but it is already very rewarding now with its combination of depth, finesse, and energy.

Production
Mills Vineyard was planted in 1984 on Mount Harlan, where limestone-rich soils echo some of the great Pinot Noir sites of Burgundy. The cool climate and high-altitude conditions help preserve freshness and aromatic complexity, making it an ideal setting for refined, age-worthy Pinot Noir. Winemaker Mike Waller aged the wine for 17 months in French oak barrels, including 30% new oak, adding texture and subtle spice without overpowering the fruit.

Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roast duck, quail, herb-crusted lamb, mushroom dishes, or salmon with earthy accompaniments. Serve slightly cool, ideally around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if drinking it young to let the aromatics and savoury layers open fully.

Producer
Calera is one of California’s most respected producers of Pinot Noir, founded by Josh Jensen, who was inspired by Burgundy and sought out limestone soils in California to make world-class Pinot. The estate on Mount Harlan has become a benchmark for cool-climate, site-driven wines and a reference point for serious American Pinot Noir. Over the years, Calera has earned a strong reputation for producing wines of purity, structure, and longevity.
