Description
Calera Mills Vineyard Pinot Noir 2010 is a finely crafted Californian Pinot Noir that combines mountain-grown intensity with Burgundy-like finesse. Sourced from limestone-rich Mount Harlan and shaped by Calera’s meticulous winemaking, it delivers both elegance and depth, with the kind of structure that makes it exciting now and promising for years to come.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a poised, polished character with a vivid Pinot Noir profile. The nose is layered with dark cherries, strawberries, clove, thyme, sage, and a hint of cocoa, leading into a palate that unfolds with blackcurrant, dark plum, cloudberry, mushroom, black pepper, and a subtle touch of grilled tomato.
What stands out most is the balance between intensity and restraint: the fruit is ripe but never heavy, while the savory, earthy details give the wine real complexity. This is a Pinot Noir with excellent aging potential, built for the long haul, yet already offering plenty of nuance and pleasure.
Production
Mills Vineyard was planted in 1984 on Mount Harlan, where the soils are notably rich in limestone, echoing some of the most prized terroirs of Burgundy. The cool mountain climate and mineral-driven site provide ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, allowing the fruit to develop concentration while retaining freshness and lift. The wine was aged for 17 months in French oak barrels, 30% of them new, giving it added texture, spice, and subtle oak complexity without overshadowing the vineyard character.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roast duck, pheasant, mushroom dishes, grilled salmon, and herb-roasted chicken, as well as earthy vegetarian plates featuring wild mushrooms or lentils. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if opening it young to help the aromas open up fully.
Producer
Calera is one of California’s most respected Pinot Noir producers, known for its pioneering focus on high-elevation vineyards and limestone soils. Founded by Josh Jensen, the winery helped establish Mount Harlan as a reference point for serious cool-climate wine in California. Its wines have earned a strong reputation for site expression, longevity, and Burgundian elegance rather than sheer power.
