Caldaro Lason Merlot Riserva 2023

Lasón Merlot Riserva 2023 is a polished expression of Merlot from Alto Adige, balancing generous dark-fruit character with supple tannins and aromatic spice. Made by Kellerei Kaltern, a winery founded in 1900, it reflects the region’s warm lakeside growing conditions and the cooperative’s long-standing winemaking tradition.

Tasting Notes
It shows an intense, clear ruby-red colour. The expressive nose brings together blackberry, black cherry and red berry notes, with hints of liquorice, star anise and eucalyptus. Medium-bodied on the palate, it has well-balanced tannins and a rounded, harmonious feel. Ripe, sweet-fruited flavours linger on the finish. The wine’s barrel maturation should allow it to develop further over the next few years; specific cellaring guidance is not provided.

Production
The Merlot comes from south-facing hillside vineyards at 250–350 metres above sea level, in the warm, mild microclimate around Lake Kaltern. The vines grow in alluvial soils rich in clay, silt and gravel. After two weeks of fermentation on the skins, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures for 12 months in barrels, some of them new. It is lightly filtered before bottling. Harvesting methods are not specified.

Food & Serving
Enjoy with dark meats, such as braised beef or grilled lamb, and with mature cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. A short decant of 30–60 minutes can help the wine open up, particularly if serving it young.

Kellerei Kaltern, also known as Kaltern Caldaro, was founded in 1900 and is closely associated with the vineyards around Lake Kaltern in Alto Adige. Lasón Merlot Riserva is presented as one of the winery’s flagship-quality wines, with a reported production of around 20,000 bottles. The winery also follows sustainable viticulture and holds FAIR’N GREEN certification.
