Description

Ca' del Bosco Maurizio Zanella Rosso Sebino 2021 is a flagship Bordeaux-style blend from Lombardy that bears the signature of the estate’s visionary founder, Maurizio Zanella, right on the label. Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc sourced from the estate’s finest vineyards, it is a powerful yet impeccably polished red that celebrates both the man and the unique Franciacorta terroir. Widely regarded as one of the wines that helped drive the ‘Italian oenological renaissance’, this cuvée stands as a modern classic of northern Italian red wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 shows a deep, intense ruby colour with violet highlights hinting at its youth and concentration. The nose opens with layered aromas of ripe blackcurrant, plum and blackberry, supported by notes of graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf and sweet baking spices from fine-grained oak, along with subtle hints of violet and cocoa. On the palate, this is a structured, full-bodied red with a core of dark, ripe fruit wrapped in ripe, velvety tannins. Flavours of black cherry, cassis and dark plum are woven with espresso, pencil shavings, vanilla and a gentle herbal lift from the Cabernet Franc. The balance between richness, freshness and oak is finely judged, leading to a long, savoury, mineral-driven finish. Built for longevity, the 2021 has the concentration and structure to evolve beautifully for 10–20 years or more in a good cellar, gradually gaining complexity and tertiary notes of leather, truffle and cigar box.

Production
The grapes for Maurizio Zanella Rosso Sebino are grown in selected estate vineyards in the rolling Franciacorta hills of Lombardy, where glacial moraines, well-drained soils and a temperate climate moderated by Lake Iseo create ideal conditions for Bordeaux varieties. Yields are kept deliberately low to maximise concentration, and the grapes are harvested by hand, with strict selection both in the vineyard and on sorting tables. After gentle destemming and crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, often with frequent pump-overs to extract colour, flavour and fine tannins. The wine is then aged in small French oak barriques, a significant proportion of them new, for an extended period to develop complexity, integrate the oak and refine the tannic structure before blending, bottling and further bottle ageing prior to release.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic red that shines alongside richly flavoured dishes: think grilled or roasted red meats, dry-aged steaks, slow-braised beef or lamb shanks, game birds, and hearty stews. It also pairs beautifully with truffle risotto, mushroom-based dishes, aged hard cheeses and refined preparations of venison or wild boar. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux glasses to allow the wine to open up fully. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and reveal the full aromatic spectrum.

Producer
Ca' del Bosco, founded in the late 1960s by Maurizio Zanella in the heart of Franciacorta, is one of Italy’s most acclaimed and innovative wineries. Originally famous for elevating Franciacorta sparkling wine to world-class status, the estate also became a pioneer of serious, terroir-driven still wines from Lombardy, with the Maurizio Zanella Rosso standing as its emblematic red. Known for meticulous vineyard work, state-of-the-art facilities and a relentless pursuit of quality, Ca' del Bosco has earned a reputation as a benchmark producer in the region, contributing significantly to Lombardy’s rise on the international fine wine stage and garnering top scores from leading wine critics and guides year after year.
