Bruno Rocca Barbaresco Currà 2023 is a precise, structured expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piemonte’s most celebrated appellations. Made from vines planted in the 1950s, it combines the savoury tension and mineral character of Barbaresco with concentrated dark-fruit flavours, elegant oak integration and impressive ageing potential. The wine has received 93 points from Vinous.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays an intense ruby-red colour with emerging garnet hues. Its bouquet is layered and expressive, with aromas of blackberry and blueberry complemented by subtle notes of sweet pipe tobacco. On the palate, it begins with lively freshness and savoury, saline nuances before developing greater depth and intensity. Firm Nebbiolo structure, refined tannins and a long, elegant finish give the wine excellent balance and persistence.
With its concentration, acidity and tannic framework, the 2023 has the structure to develop beautifully in bottle. While approachable with decanting, further complexity can be expected with several years of cellaring.
Production
The grapes come from low-yielding vines planted in the 1950s in Barbaresco, where calcium-rich soils contribute tension, energy and a clearly defined texture. Nebbiolo is slowly fermented in wooden vats for approximately 30 days, encouraging gentle extraction of colour, aroma and structure. The wine then matures in large French oak casks, with ageing lasting up to 36 months to allow the fruit, tannins and oak to integrate gradually while preserving the site’s natural character.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours when drinking the wine young to soften its tannins and reveal its aromatic layers; older bottles should be decanted carefully, if at all. Its structure and savoury depth make it an excellent partner for braised beef, roasted or grilled red meats, wild game, truffle dishes and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Bruno Rocca – Rabajà is a family estate with roots in the Langhe dating back to 1950. The winery is recognised for producing authentic, terroir-driven wines that express the character of Barbaresco, with a particular focus on low yields, careful cellar work and long maturation. Its Barbaresco Currà reflects this commitment through fruit from historic vines, traditional fermentation in wood and patient ageing in large French oak casks.
