Description

Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2023 is a finely etched expression of one of Vosne’s most coveted premier cru vineyards. In the hands of Domaine Bruno Clavelier, this site delivers a wine that is both silky and profound, balancing sensual Vosne spice with precise, mineral-driven structure. The 2023 vintage brings energy and brightness, promising a classic, ageworthy Burgundy for collectors and Burgundy lovers alike. Les Beaux Monts sits high on the slope above some of Vosne’s most illustrious grands crus, and is prized for its combination of finesse and tension. Organically farmed old vines, low yields, and a meticulous, traditional approach in the cellar make this bottling a standout in its category. Historically, wines from Les Beaux Monts have been celebrated for their aromatic complexity and their ability to age gracefully, and Clavelier’s rendition is a benchmark example.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts shows a luminous, translucent ruby with hints of garnet at the rim, reflecting its Pinot Noir purity. The nose is immediately seductive yet refined, opening with wild strawberry, red cherry and raspberry, layered with rose petals, violets, and subtle notes of Asian spice. With air, more complex nuances emerge: sandalwood, fine tea leaf, a touch of orange peel, and a discreet, chalky minerality. On the palate, the wine is precise and beautifully detailed, with a filigreed texture typical of Beaux Monts. Juicy red berries and pomegranate lead, supported by a core of darker cherry and a fine, savory undercurrent. The tannins are ultra-fine and silky, providing structure without weight, while vibrant acidity gives the wine lift and length. Delicate notes of spice box, forest floor and limestone minerality linger on a long, graceful finish. While already tempting in youth for its perfume and purity, the 2023 has the balance and structure to evolve over 10–15 years, gaining further complexity and depth with bottle age.

Production
Les Beaux Monts is a high-slope premier cru in Vosne-Romanée, rooted in thin, limestone-rich soils over marls that naturally limit vigor and yield grapes of great concentration and finesse. Domaine Bruno Clavelier farms these old-vine parcels organically, with careful work in the vineyard to respect biodiversity and ensure perfectly ripe, healthy fruit at harvest. Grapes are picked by hand in small crates, with strict sorting to keep only the finest bunches. In the cellar, Clavelier follows a traditional, minimalist approach: gentle extraction, a balanced proportion of whole clusters depending on vintage character, native yeast fermentation, and élevage in carefully selected French oak, with a restrained use of new barrels to preserve terroir expression. The result is a wine that speaks clearly of its site, rather than of heavy winemaking signatures.

Food & Serving
This Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts pairs beautifully with refined, delicately flavored dishes that mirror its elegance. Think roast pigeon or duck breast with cherry or plum accents, veal tenderloin, or a simple roasted chicken with wild mushrooms and herbs. It also shines alongside dishes like truffled poultry, game birds, and earthy mushroom risottos, as well as aged, nutty cheeses such as Comté or aged Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its perfume and texture. Decanting young vintages for 45–60 minutes will help the wine open up its aromatics and soften the structure; older bottles (once matured) should be handled more gently and decanted only briefly to remove sediment.

Producer
Domaine Bruno Clavelier is a highly respected, small grower estate based in Vosne-Romanée, known among Burgundy enthusiasts for its precise, terroir-transparent wines. The family’s roots in the village go back generations, with Bruno taking over in the late 1980s and moving decisively toward organic viticulture long before it became widespread in the region. Today, the domaine is certified organic and farms an enviable mosaic of old-vine parcels across Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny and surrounding appellations. Clavelier’s focus on low yields, meticulous vineyard work, and traditional, low-intervention winemaking has earned the estate a reputation as one of the quiet stars of the Côte de Nuits, with cuvées like Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts regularly cited by critics and collectors for their purity, precision and ageworthiness.
