Description

Bruno Clavelier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux 2023 is a finely etched expression of Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir from one of Gevrey’s most characterful premier cru vineyards. Crafted by the meticulous hands of Domaine Bruno Clavelier, this cuvée marries precision, terroir transparency, and pure fruit definition in a vibrant, young Burgundy. Les Corbeaux sits just below the grands crus, and in the right hands – as here – it offers near grand cru depth with classic Gevrey structure.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Les Corbeaux shows a luminous, medium ruby hue with youthful purple reflections at the rim, signaling its energy and concentration. The nose is refined yet expressive, opening with wild cherry, raspberry, and redcurrant, layered with rose petals, violets, and a subtle undercurrent of crushed limestone. With air, more savoury notes emerge: hints of smoked tea, damp earth, graphite, and a discreet touch of sweet spice from élevage. On the palate, the wine is poised and finely chiseled, with a core of pure red berry fruit wrapped in ultra-fine, chalky tannins. Precision and tension are the hallmarks here: vibrant acidity carries flavours of red cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate, while delicate notes of forest floor, herbs, and black pepper lend complexity. The oak is beautifully integrated, offering just a gentle framework rather than overt flavour. The finish is long, saline, and mouthwatering, suggesting impressive longevity for the vintage. Enjoyable in its aromatic youth with time in the glass, it will gain in depth and harmony over the next 8–15 years, depending on cellar conditions.

Production
Les Corbeaux is a premier cru vineyard situated on the lower slopes just south-west of the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, close to the grands crus, on well-drained, limestone-rich soils with a mix of clay and small stones that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavour. Domaine Bruno Clavelier farms organically and biodynamically, with old-vine Pinot Noir tended by hand and harvested manually to ensure optimal ripeness and rigorous selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, the philosophy is minimal intervention: whole clusters are often used in varying proportions depending on the vintage, fermentation relies on native yeasts, and extraction is gentle to preserve finesse and aromatic purity. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with a restrained use of new oak, allowing the terroir of Les Corbeaux and the clarity of the 2023 vintage to shine through.

Food & Serving
This Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru is a superb partner to refined yet flavourful dishes: think roasted duck breast with cherries, herb-crusted lamb, veal with morel mushrooms, or game birds. It also pairs beautifully with earthy dishes such as wild mushroom risotto, truffled poultry, or aged, semi-firm cheeses like Comté or Tomme de Savoie. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. In its youth, decant for 45–60 minutes to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to unfold; as it evolves in bottle, a gentle 20–30 minute decant will be sufficient to let the wine fully express its complexity.

Producer
Domaine Bruno Clavelier is a highly regarded, small family estate based in Vosne-Romanée, with holdings in some of the Côte de Nuits’ most coveted terroirs, including Gevrey-Chambertin. Descended from a long line of vignerons, Bruno Clavelier took charge in the late 1980s and quickly established the domaine as a benchmark for pure, terroir-driven Burgundy. The estate has been certified organic for many years, and its commitment to low yields, old vines, and meticulous, minimally interventionist winemaking has made it a reference point for traditional yet vividly expressive Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir. Critics and enthusiasts alike prize the wines for their finesse, precision, and their uncanny ability to translate subtle differences between each climat, with Les Corbeaux among the standout expressions of Gevrey’s premier crus.
