Description
Bruno Clavelier Corton Grand Cru Le Rognet 2023 is a powerful yet finely etched expression of Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most revered hillsides. Sourced from old vines on the upper slopes of Corton, this is a wine that marries grand cru structure with the precision and purity that define Bruno Clavelier’s style. The 2023 vintage brings a fresh, vibrant energy, promising both early appeal and serious aging potential. Le Rognet is a distinguished lieu-dit within the Corton Grand Cru, known for producing wines of depth, minerality, and longevity. Crafting this cuvée with the same meticulous, low-intervention approach used across the domaine, Bruno Clavelier delivers a wine that speaks clearly of its terroir: stony soils, high elevation, and a cool, ventilated exposition that preserves elegance even in warmer years.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Corton Grand Cru Le Rognet shows a deep, luminous ruby with garnet highlights at the rim, hinting at both concentration and finesse. The nose opens with pure red and black cherry, wild strawberry, and ripe raspberry, followed by layers of violet, rose petal, and peony. With air, more complex notes emerge: crushed stone, subtle forest floor, black tea, and a refined, well-integrated touch of oak spice (clove, nutmeg, and a whisper of vanilla), never overpowering the fruit.
On the palate, this wine is structured yet silken, combining the firm backbone typical of Corton with the elegance and lift that Bruno Clavelier is known for. The attack is precise and energetic, with vivid red fruit, blackcurrant, and a hint of blood orange zest. The mid-palate is dense but finely woven, showing savory undertones of earth, graphite, and dried herbs alongside delicate tannins that are ripe, chalky, and persistent. A vibrant, sapid acidity draws the wine through to a long, mineral-driven finish, where notes of cherry pit, stone, and subtle spice linger. While already expressive in its youth, the 2023 Le Rognet clearly has the structure to age gracefully for 12–20 years, evolving toward more tertiary notes of sous-bois, truffle, and game over time.
Production
The Corton Le Rognet parcel sits high on the famed Corton hill in the Côte de Beaune, facing east to southeast on well-drained, limestone-rich soils laced with marl and stones. This stony, elevated terroir naturally limits yields and endows the wine with both power and a signature mineral tension. Domaine Bruno Clavelier works organically and biodynamically in the vineyards, relying on old vines, careful canopy management, and manual harvesting to ensure optimal ripeness and selection of the grapes. In 2023, the fruit was picked by hand at ideal physiological maturity, then sorted meticulously in the cellar. Vinification followed a traditional, low-intervention path: native-yeast fermentation in open wooden vats, with a judicious proportion of whole clusters to enhance aromatic complexity and structure. Extraction was gentle, through pump-overs and a few punch-downs as needed, aiming for finesse rather than sheer power. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels (with a restrained use of new oak) for extended élevage, allowing it to harmonize and gain complexity without masking the character of the terroir.
Food & Serving
This Corton Grand Cru Le Rognet is a natural partner for refined yet flavorful dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted duck breast, pigeon, or guinea fowl, as well as lamb saddle, veal tenderloin, or a simple but perfectly cooked entrecôte. Game birds, mushroom-based dishes (such as wild mushroom fricassée or porcini risotto), and earthy preparations with truffle or root vegetables all highlight its savory depth and mineral spine. For cheese, opt for aged Comté, semi-firm alpine cheeses, or a well-aged Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open and soften the tannins; with bottle age, a gentle short decant mainly to remove any sediment will suffice.

Domaine Bruno Clavelier, based in Vosne-Romanée, is a highly regarded, family-run estate known for its meticulous, terroir-driven approach to Pinot Noir in Burgundy. The domaine’s history stretches back several generations, with Bruno taking over the family holdings and gradually shifting to organic viticulture in the 1990s, long before it became fashionable. Today, the estate farms old-vine parcels across some of the Côte d’Or’s most prestigious appellations, from village-level sites to premier and grand crus like Corton. The philosophy is one of minimal intervention: low yields, no chemical inputs in the vineyard, and traditional, non-manipulative winemaking in the cellar, all in the service of expressing each terroir as clearly as possible. Domaine Bruno Clavelier has earned a strong reputation among Burgundy enthusiasts and critics alike for producing wines of purity, precision, and authenticity, wines that stand among the most characterful and ageworthy in the region.
