Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Cuvée Centenaire displays a deep, vibrant ruby to garnet hue with a shimmering edge that hints at both concentration and freshness. The nose is intense and layered, offering ripe black cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry coulis, intertwined with notes of garrigue (thyme, rosemary and lavender), black olive, licorice, cracked pepper and warm stones. On the palate, it shows the silkiness and generosity that old-vine Grenache is famed for, supported by Syrah’s darker fruit and subtle structure. Expect waves of red and black berries, plum compote and kirsch, wrapped in fine, velvety tannins and lifted by a fresh, savory backbone. Hints of cocoa, dried herbs, sweet spice and mineral-driven salinity emerge on the long, persistent finish. While already seductive in its youth, the wine has the depth and structure to age beautifully for 12–20 years from the vintage, gaining complexity, tertiary notes and seamlessly integrated tannins over time.

Production
The Cuvée Centenaire is drawn from some of the oldest Grenache vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape—many over 100 years old—rooted in the appellation’s classic terroir of galets roulés (rounded river stones) over clay and sandy subsoils. This stony landscape, combined with the mistral wind and abundant sunshine of the southern Rhône, ensures excellent ripening while preserving balance and freshness. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in small crates at optimal maturity and carefully sorted to retain only pristine fruit. Vinification traditionally involves gentle destemming, temperature-controlled fermentation and an extended maceration to extract color, flavor and fine tannins without harshness. Aging takes place in a combination of large foudres and/or older oak vessels, chosen to respect the purity of the fruit and the expression of the ancient vines rather than impose overt new oak character.

Food & Serving
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an ideal partner for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef, duck with cherry or fig reduction, game birds, and hearty stews like daube Provençale. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses, truffled dishes and Mediterranean cuisine featuring olive, tomato and aromatic herbs. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression; if opened in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to unfurl the aromatics and soften the tannins. With additional bottle age, a shorter decant or simply opening the bottle 30–45 minutes before serving is usually sufficient.
