Description

Brocard Pierre Blanc de Blancs 2017 Côte des Bar is a finely poised Champagne crafted entirely from Chardonnay grown in the southernmost reaches of the region. This cuvée showcases the tension between bright, chiselled acidity and ripe, textural fruit that the Côte des Bar is increasingly celebrated for. Vintage 2017 brings its own character: precise, expressive and already beautifully open, yet with the structure to reward a few more years in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Blanc de Blancs shows a pale, luminous straw colour with fine, persistent bubbles forming a delicate mousse. The visual impression is one of freshness and elegance, hinting at the wine’s finesse and energy. On the nose, expect lifted aromas of lemon zest, green apple and white blossom layered with chalky minerality, fresh brioche and a subtle nuttiness from aging on the lees. The palate is pure and linear at first, with citrus and crisp orchard fruit giving way to riper notes of pear, a touch of stone fruit and a creamy, gently toasty mid-palate. The acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, balanced by a refined, chalk-dust texture and a long, saline finish. While already drinking beautifully, this 2017 Blanc de Blancs has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining more complexity, nuttiness and depth with time in bottle.

Production
The Chardonnay for this cuvée comes from the Côte des Bar, a sub-region of Champagne known for its Kimmeridgian limestone and clay soils, similar to those found in Chablis. This terroir imparts tension, minerality and a distinct saline edge to the wines. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection and integrity of the fruit, especially important for a pure Blanc de Blancs expression. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed, and the base wines are vinified parcel by parcel, often in stainless steel to preserve freshness, with a period of aging on lees to build texture and complexity. The secondary fermentation takes place in bottle, followed by extended lees aging (sur lie) to develop the fine mousse and subtle brioche and pastry notes that complement the Chardonnay’s natural precision.

Food & Serving
This Champagne is a natural partner for refined, delicate dishes where its freshness and minerality can shine. Pair it with oysters, scallop carpaccio, sushi and sashimi, or simply prepared white fish and seafood tartare. It also works beautifully with goat cheese, fresh cheeses, and light poultry dishes with a citrus or cream sauce. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C to highlight its freshness, allowing the glass to warm slightly to reveal more layered aromatics. A brief, gentle aeration in the glass is usually sufficient; decanting is not essential but, for those who enjoy a more open, expressive profile, a quick splash into a small carafe just before serving can soften the edges and bring out the wine’s creamy, toasty notes.

Producer
Brocard Pierre is a quality-focused grower-producer based in the Côte des Bar, the southernmost part of Champagne that has risen from relative obscurity to one of the region’s most dynamic sources of characterful wines. Working primarily with estate-grown fruit, the domaine emphasizes terroir expression, sustainable vineyard practices and careful, low-intervention winemaking. In a region historically overshadowed by the grandes marques to the north, Brocard Pierre has helped highlight the Côte des Bar’s potential—especially for distinctive, mineral-driven Champagnes from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their Blanc de Blancs bottlings, in particular, have gained attention among enthusiasts for their precision, clarity and excellent value within the world of grower Champagne.
