Description

Bret Brothers & La Soufrandière Saint-Véran La Bonnode ZEN 2020 is a finely etched, terroir-driven Chardonnay from the southern reaches of Burgundy. Crafted from a small, meticulously farmed parcel in the famed Saint-Véran appellation, it captures the purity and tension that have made the Bret brothers cult figures among white Burgundy lovers. The “ZEN” designation reflects their minimalist, low-sulfur philosophy in the cellar, allowing the character of site and season to shine with remarkable clarity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Bonnode ZEN 2020 shows a bright, luminous straw-yellow hue with greenish reflections, signaling both freshness and youth. The nose is precise and vibrant, with notes of lemon zest, green apple, and white peach layered over chalky minerality, crushed shell, and hints of white flowers and fresh almonds. On the palate, the wine is focused and energetic, combining a juicy core of stone and citrus fruits with a taut, saline backbone. The clay-limestone soils translate into a fine, linear structure and a distinctive, mouthwatering minerality. Subtle brioche and hazelnut nuances emerge with air, reflecting the careful aging on lees without overt oak influence. The finish is long, pure, and refreshing, suggesting a solid aging potential of 6–8 years from the vintage, during which it will gain further complexity and depth while preserving its vibrant acidity.

Production
The La Bonnode climat is a mere two-hectare parcel in Saint-Véran, lying at around 250 meters altitude under the Roche de Vergisson, on east-facing slopes of clay over limestone—classic terrain for tense, mineral-inflected Chardonnay. The approximately 35-year-old vines are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with the grapes brought to the cellar in small crates to preserve integrity. Whole-bunch pressing is followed by a spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, reflecting the domaine’s low-intervention approach. The wine then matures for an extended period (typically around 17 months), first in used barrels to avoid heavy oak imprint, and subsequently in neutral tanks after blending. Full malolactic fermentation softens the natural acidity, and only a light addition of sulfur is made just before bottling, resulting in a very low total SO₂ and a wine that is both precise and vibrantly expressive.

Food & Serving
This Saint-Véran is a versatile gastronomic white, superb with shellfish such as oysters, scallops, and langoustines, as well as simply prepared white fish, sashimi, and ceviche. It also pairs beautifully with roast chicken, veal in light cream sauces, vegetable tarts, and creamy yet not overly pungent cheeses like Comté or young goat’s cheese. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to unfold. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing additional layers of fruit and minerality.

Producer
Bret Brothers & La Soufrandière is the joint project of brothers Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret, who have earned a reputation as among the most quality-obsessed producers in the Mâconnais and greater Burgundy. La Soufrandière is their family estate in Vinzelles, farmed organically (and often biodynamically), while Bret Brothers serves as their micro-négociant label, sourcing from meticulously chosen parcels like La Bonnode. Their work has been instrumental in elevating the image of southern Burgundy, demonstrating that Saint-Véran and neighboring appellations can produce whites of true Burgundian finesse and longevity. Known for minimal intervention, native yeasts, careful élevage, and often low sulfur use, they are regularly cited by critics and enthusiasts as benchmark producers for pure, terroir-expressive Chardonnay in the region.
