Branon 2009 is a powerful, small‑production red from Pessac-Léognan in Bordeaux, crafted for collectors who appreciate depth, richness and longevity. Sourced from a tiny vineyard planted to Merlot and Cabernet Franc and nestled between the esteemed estates of Malartic-Lagravière and Haut-Bailly, it has earned a near cult-like following among Bordeaux enthusiasts. The 2009 vintage is widely regarded as one of the estate’s greatest efforts, standing shoulder to shoulder with the legendary 2000 and built to evolve gracefully over decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Branon 2009 shows a dense, opaque plum to purple core with a youthful sheen that still hints at its remarkable concentration. The nose is intense and layered, opening with notes of blackberries and ripe black plum, followed by truffle, scorched earth, warm embers, cocoa and a subtle graphite edge. Hints of smoked herbs and exotic spice emerge with air, giving the wine both sensuality and complexity. On the palate, this is full-bodied and opulent, with a lush, velvety texture that coats the mouth. The Merlot brings plush dark fruit and glycerol richness, while the Cabernet Franc adds structure, lift and aromatic detail. Flavors of blackberry compote, black cherry, licorice and dark chocolate are interwoven with earthy minerality, tobacco and a touch of toasted oak. The tannins are abundant yet polished, framing a long, resonant finish. Still youthful, the 2009 has impressive aging potential; while already deeply enjoyable, it is expected to show at its best from around 2018 and continue to develop complexity through 2040, and likely beyond under proper cellaring.

Production
Branon’s vineyard lies in the heart of Pessac-Léognan, on classic gravel and clay-limestone soils that provide excellent drainage and a natural balance of power and finesse. The vines, planted mainly to Merlot with a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc, benefit from meticulous, low-yield viticulture to concentrate flavor and terroir expression. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict sorting to retain only pristine fruit. Vinification is carried out in small lots, allowing close monitoring of each parcel; long, gentle maceration extracts color, tannin and aromatic intensity without harshness. The wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barrels, a large proportion of which are new, contributing texture, complexity and a subtle smoky note that harmonizes with Pessac-Léognan’s naturally earthy, mineral character.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic wine that shines alongside richly flavored dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye steak, beef short ribs, game birds, or veal with truffle jus. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, and hard or semi-hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and complexity. Given its concentration and structure, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its current stage of evolution, both to soften the tannins and to allow the full spectrum of aromas—dark fruit, earth, truffle and spice—to unfold.

Château Branon is a boutique estate in Pessac-Léognan overseen by Hélène Garcin, one of Bordeaux’s most respected modern vignerons, also known for her work at Clos l’Eglise in Pomerol and Château Barde-Haut in Saint-Émilion. With only around 500 cases produced, Branon is crafted on a micro-scale, focusing on meticulous vineyard work and artisanal winemaking rather than volume. Although relatively young compared to some of its illustrious neighbors, the estate has quickly gained a reputation as a cult property, admired for its intensely concentrated yet refined reds that capture the gravely, smoky, truffle-tinged signature of Pessac-Léognan. The 2009 vintage, often cited alongside the great 2000, has solidified Branon’s status as one of the appellation’s most coveted small-production wines.
