Description

Brane Cantenac Blanc 2019 is the rare white wine from the famed Margaux Second Growth estate, Château Brane-Cantenac. Crafted in small quantities, it offers an elegant, Sauvignon-led profile with a distinctly Bordelais sense of refinement. This cuvée showcases the estate’s gravelly Margaux terroir through a fresh, aromatic and finely textured dry white. First produced only in recent years, Brane Cantenac Blanc has quickly become one of the more sought-after white Bordeaux from the Left Bank, reflecting both tradition and innovation at this historic château. It bridges classic Sauvignon character with the creamier, more complex style that comes from careful élevage and attention to detail in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Brane Cantenac Blanc is pale straw with green highlights, bright and crystalline, hinting at its lively, youthful character. The nose opens with Sauvignon-driven botanical notes – think fresh herbs and crushed leaves – alongside delicate white flowers and a touch of citrus zest. Subtle pastry-cream and brioche nuances add a gourmand layer, suggesting time spent on lees and a gentle kiss of oak. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet light on its feet, combining brightness with a smooth, almost silky texture. Aromatic citrus, white peach and orchard fruits weave together with floral tones and a faint, creamy undertone that never feels heavy. The finish is dry, precise and lingering, with a clean saline snap that invites another sip. Enjoyable now for its freshness and aromatics, it should evolve gracefully over the next 5–7 years, gaining a bit more complexity and rounding out its edges while retaining its vibrant core.

Production
Brane Cantenac Blanc 2019 comes from selected plots within the estate’s Margaux vineyards, planted on the deep gravel and sand-over-clay soils that have made Brane-Cantenac renowned for finesse and aromatic purity. The blend is classically Bordeaux in style, dominated by Sauvignon Blanc and complemented by other traditional white varieties to add texture and depth. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and aromatic intensity, with careful sorting in the cellar. Fermentation takes place at controlled, cool temperatures to lock in delicate floral and citrus notes, followed by élevage on fine lees – often in a mix of stainless steel and French oak barrels – to build mid-palate creaminess and subtle complexity without overpowering the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile white that shines with refined yet simply prepared dishes. Think oysters, scallops, grilled prawns, or a classic plateau de fruits de mer; it also pairs beautifully with herb-roasted chicken, veal in light cream sauces, and fresh goat cheese or young, mild cow’s milk cheeses. Green vegetable dishes – asparagus, peas, artichokes – are handled particularly well thanks to its Sauvignon-driven lift. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to showcase its aromatic precision. A brief decant of 15–20 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little ahead of time, can help the floral and pastry-cream notes unfold more fully in the glass.

Producer
Château Brane-Cantenac is one of the great historic estates of Margaux, classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. With a history stretching back to the 18th century, the estate has long been celebrated for producing some of the appellation’s most perfumed and elegant reds. Under the stewardship of the Lurton family, and particularly Henri Lurton in recent decades, Brane-Cantenac has invested heavily in vineyard precision and cellar refinement. The creation of Brane Cantenac Blanc represents a modern chapter in the château’s story, showcasing its exceptional terroir through a limited-production white wine that has quickly gained recognition among critics and enthusiasts as one of the more distinctive white Bordelais offerings from the Left Bank.
