Description
Château Branaire-Ducru 2021 is a refined Saint-Julien classified growth that combines classic Bordeaux elegance with the freshness of a modern, cooler vintage. Produced from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it offers the polished structure, precision and balance that have made this estate one of the Left Bank’s most admired names.
Tasting Notes
The wine typically shows a deep ruby-purple colour with excellent clarity and brightness. On the nose, expect layers of blackcurrant, ripe plum, cedar, graphite, violets and a subtle touch of spice, all lifted by the freshness of the 2021 vintage.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and finely textured, with precise tannins, fresh acidity and a well-defined core of dark fruit, tobacco leaf and mineral notes. Branaire-Ducru 2021 is built more on finesse than power, and it should evolve beautifully over the next 10–20 years, gaining complexity and silkiness with time in bottle.
Production
Branaire-Ducru is located in Saint-Julien on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravel-rich soils provide excellent drainage and help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve full aromatic and structural expression. The estate’s vineyards are carefully managed to preserve balance and freshness, with hand harvesting typically used to select ripe fruit parcel by parcel. Vinification is carried out with an emphasis on gentle extraction and purity, followed by maturation in oak barrels to integrate tannin and enhance complexity.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, or mushroom-based dishes. It also pairs well with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or cheddar. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for about 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas and texture to open fully.
Producer
Château Branaire-Ducru is a historic Fourth Growth estate from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification and has long been associated with the quality and consistency of Saint-Julien. Over the years, it has earned a reputation for producing classically styled, ageworthy wines that reflect the appellation’s balance of power and elegance. The château is widely respected for its disciplined vineyard work and for crafting wines that remain true to their terroir.
