Description
Bouchard Père & Fils Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2020 is a powerful yet finely sculpted expression of one of Burgundy’s most legendary vineyards. This is a profound red Burgundy built for both contemplation and long-term cellaring, combining intensity with remarkable finesse. Drawn from a historic Grand Cru site, it captures the essence of Gevrey-Chambertin in a particularly refined and complete style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Chambertin Clos de Bèze shows a deep, shimmering ruby color with youthful violet highlights, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose is layered and complex: wild red and black berries, cassis and ripe cherry are interwoven with notes of orange zest, exotic and sweet baking spices, dark clay earth, black truffle and a finely judged touch of toasty new oak.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, enveloping and seamless, with a rich, saturating core of pristine fruit. Ripe yet refined tannins provide a velvety frame, while lively acidity keeps everything poised and energetic. Flavors echo the nose—blackberry, blackcurrant, and wild strawberry, with subtle citrus lift, savory earth, and truffle depth—leading into a long, resonant finish that lingers with spice and mineral nuance. This 2020 is still developing and will reward patience, with an aging potential of 15–25 years or more in a good cellar.
Production
Chambertin Clos de Bèze is one of the crown jewels of the Côte de Nuits, a Grand Cru vineyard characterized by its limestone-rich soils layered with marl and clay, excellent drainage, and a privileged, gently sloping exposure that ensures optimal ripening. Bouchard Père & Fils sources low-yielding Pinot Noir from carefully tended vines, typically farmed with great attention to canopy management and fruit selection to preserve balance and concentration. Harvest is carried out by hand, with rigorous sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification is classic Burgundian: whole berries and, depending on the year, a proportion of whole clusters are fermented in temperature-controlled vats, followed by gentle extraction to respect the finesse of the terroir. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with a significant but judicious proportion of new oak, allowing the Grand Cru character and complexity to develop without overpowering the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru deserves equally refined cuisine: pair it with roast duck or pigeon, venison or other game birds, beef Wellington, or veal in truffle jus. It also shines with dishes featuring wild mushrooms, black truffle, and earthy root vegetables, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gruyère. Serve at 15–17°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to unfurl; older bottles should be decanted more gently, just before serving, mainly to remove any sediment.
Producer
Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of Burgundy’s oldest and most respected domaines, with a history that spans nearly three centuries. Based in Beaune, the house has assembled one of the region’s most impressive mosaics of vineyards, including a remarkable collection of premier and grand cru parcels across the Côte d’Or. Their deep roots and long-term stewardship have made Bouchard a reference point for classically styled Burgundy that balances tradition with precise, modern winemaking. Chambertin Clos de Bèze sits at the very top of their portfolio, representing both the historical prestige of the estate and its ongoing commitment to expressing the finest terroirs of Bourgogne at the highest level.
