Description

Boscarelli Prugnolo Rosso di Montepulciano 2021 is a lively, approachable Tuscan red that showcases the pure, vibrant side of Sangiovese and its local partner, Mammolo. Crafted as a fresh and easy-drinking counterpart to the estate’s famous Vino Nobile, it delivers plenty of character without the weight or formality of a cellar wine. This is Prugnolo Gentile – the Montepulciano name for Sangiovese – in its most joyful, everyday expression.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Prugnolo Rosso shows a bright, translucent ruby hue with youthful purple reflections at the rim, signalling freshness and energy. The bouquet is animated and expressive: notes of violets, sour cherries, redcurrants and ripe raspberries jump from the glass, supported by subtle hints of cherry stone, a touch of green wood, damp earth and wet river stones. The nose feels both floral and stony, with a charming rustic elegance that is very true to Montepulciano. On the palate, the wine is light-bodied yet intensely juicy, driven by a vivid, agile acidity that carries the red fruit flavours across the tongue. Sour cherry, wild berries and a faint herbal edge are wrapped in fine, already gentle tannins that offer structure without grip. The finish is surprisingly persistent for such an unpretentious wine, leaving a mouth-watering trail of mineral tension and bright red fruit. This is a wine meant for early enjoyment, offering its best over the next 3–5 years while its vibrant fruit and crisp, refreshing character are at their peak.

Production
Poderi Boscarelli’s Prugnolo Rosso comes from vineyards in the Montepulciano area of Tuscany, where Sangiovese (locally known as Prugnolo Gentile) and Mammolo thrive on well-drained, stony soils rich in clay and sand with a notable mineral component. The local microclimate, with warm days and cooler nights, helps preserve acidity while ripening the grapes slowly and evenly. The fruit is typically harvested by hand to allow careful selection in the vineyard, ensuring only healthy, aromatic bunches make it to the cellar. Vinification focuses on expressing a fresh, youthful style: fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve the bright fruit aromatics, with moderate maceration to extract colour and gentle tannins rather than power. Ageing is usually brief and largely in neutral vessels (such as used wood or stainless steel), keeping oak influence minimal so that the wine’s natural vibrancy and mineral edge can shine through.

Food & Serving
This Prugnolo Rosso is a versatile table wine that shines alongside classic Italian fare and simple, flavourful dishes. Pair it with tomato-based pastas, pizza with cured meats, grilled sausages, roast chicken, or charcuterie and semi-hard cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano. Its lively acidity also makes it a great match for antipasti, bruschetta with fresh tomatoes, and earthy vegetable dishes featuring mushrooms or beans. Serve at around 14–16 °C to emphasise its freshness and aromatic lift. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe can help the floral and mineral notes open up even more.

Producer
Poderi Boscarelli is a family-run estate based in the historic Montepulciano area of Tuscany, long regarded as one of the benchmark producers of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Founded in the mid-20th century, the winery has steadily built a reputation for classically styled, terroir-driven Sangiovese that balances elegance with depth. Their vineyards, carefully tended and often harvested by hand, are planted primarily to Prugnolo Gentile, with traditional local varieties like Mammolo playing an important supporting role. Boscarelli’s Vino Nobile regularly earns high praise from international critics, and the estate is widely considered one of the region’s reference points. The Prugnolo Rosso is their more informal, everyday expression – a wine that captures the spirit of Montepulciano and the Boscarelli style in a lighter, more accessible guise.
