Description
Boscarelli Il Nocio Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2016 is a single-vineyard expression of pure Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) from one of Montepulciano’s most respected estates. Crafted only from the Il Nocio cru, this is a wine that marries Tuscan elegance with impressive depth and age‑worthy structure. Awarded the top “Tre Bicchieri” rating by Gambero Rosso 2021, it stands as a benchmark for Vino Nobile in a superb vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Il Nocio shows a luminous, deep ruby hue with garnet reflections just starting to appear at the rim. The nose is refined and complex, opening with ripe red berries—raspberry and wild cherry—woven together with floral notes of violet and dried rose, followed by hints of forest floor, sweet tobacco, and subtle spice.
On the palate, this is a poised and finely etched wine: medium to full-bodied with a polished texture, vibrant yet integrated acidity, and very finely grained tannins. Flavors echo the nose, with layered notes of red and black forest fruits, black pepper, blood orange zest, and a delicate bitter-almond nuance on the long, noble finish. The structure and balance of the 2016 suggest excellent aging potential; stored well, it should evolve beautifully for at least 10–15 years from vintage, gaining additional tertiary notes of leather, truffle, and dried herbs.
Production
Il Nocio comes from a single, historic vineyard planted on the gently sloping hills of Montepulciano in southern Tuscany, where sandy-clay and alluvial soils rich in minerals help produce Sangiovese of great finesse and aromatic purity. The site benefits from good elevation and significant diurnal temperature swings, preserving acidity and fragrance in the grapes. Harvest is typically carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy clusters are selected. In the cellar, the must is traditionally vinified with careful temperature control and extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and complexity, without excess heaviness. The wine is then aged—often in large neutral oak casks—allowing it to develop depth and harmony while retaining the distinctive character of the Il Nocio vineyard.
Food & Serving
This Vino Nobile is a natural partner for classic Tuscan cuisine: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, wild boar ragù with pappardelle, or roasted game birds. It also shines alongside aged pecorino, truffled dishes, and earthy mushroom preparations. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the aromatics to open fully and the tannins to soften, revealing the wine’s full range of nuance and elegance.
Producer
Poderi Boscarelli is a family-run estate based in Cervognano di Montepulciano and is widely regarded as one of the reference producers for Vino Nobile. Founded in the 1960s, the winery has steadily built a reputation for terroir-driven, classically styled Sangiovese that emphasizes finesse over excess power. The Il Nocio bottling, sourced from a single cru planted in the late 1970s, has become one of the flagship wines of the appellation, regularly earning top honors such as Gambero Rosso’s coveted Tre Bicchieri. Through meticulous vineyard work and a restrained, traditional approach in the cellar, Boscarelli has played a key role in reaffirming Montepulciano’s place among Tuscany’s great red wine regions.
