Description
Bond Vecina 2019 is a powerful, single-vineyard Napa Valley red that captures the precision and polish for which Bond is renowned. Sourced from a steep, terraced, east‑facing site in the western hills of Oakville, it offers depth, tension and a quietly luxurious texture rather than overt showiness. Vecina has become one of the estate’s defining wines, a benchmark for site‑expressive Cabernet from this coveted corner of California.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Vecina is deep, opaque ruby with a vibrant, almost inky core and a narrow, youthful rim that hints at its long life ahead. The nose is strikingly complex: fresh blue and black fruits layered with ripe cherries and raspberries, lifted by notes of bay leaf, dried sage and pine needle, and underpinned by a subtle, stony mineral edge.
On the palate, the wine is simultaneously silky and authoritative. The texture feels effortless and poised—“light on its feet” yet undeniably deep and concentrated. Pure, ripe fruit cascades across the palate, framed by fine‑grained, choreographed tannins that move in a precise line rather than overwhelming. Savory herbs and a whisper of graphite add dimension, while the finish is long, vibrant and remarkably comfortable even at this early stage. With its structure and balance, 2019 Vecina will benefit from a few years of cellaring and has the potential to evolve beautifully for two decades or more.
Production
Vecina comes from a terraced, east‑facing vineyard in the western hills of Oakville, where well‑drained, rocky soils and a warm, sun‑drenched exposure produce naturally low yields and intensely flavored Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvest is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to capture optimal ripeness and preserve the nuanced expression of this single site. In the cellar, Bond employs meticulous sorting and a gentle, gravity‑led vinification, followed by élevage in high‑quality French oak barrels to refine the tannins and build complexity without overshadowing the vineyard’s distinct mineral and herbal signatures.
Food & Serving
This is a commanding red best matched with equally refined, flavorful dishes: dry‑aged ribeye, slow‑braised short ribs, roast lamb with rosemary, or game birds with wild mushrooms all make excellent companions. Aged hard cheeses—such as Comté, Parmigiano‑Reggiano or a well‑matured Gouda—also highlight its depth and structure. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F). Decanting for 2–3 hours in its youth helps the aromatics unfurl and the tannins soften; as the wine matures, a shorter decant will be sufficient to awaken its layers.
Producer
Bond was founded by Bill Harlan and his team as a grand, long‑term project dedicated solely to expressing Napa Valley’s greatest terroirs through single‑vineyard wines. Rather than focusing on blends, Bond selects a handful of exceptional hillside sites and bottles each one individually, with Vecina standing as one of its flagship vineyards. Over the years, Bond has earned a reputation for meticulous viticulture, precision winemaking and numerous high scores from leading critics, cementing its status as a reference point for site‑driven, world‑class California Cabernet.
