Description

Bond Quella 2017 is a pedigreed Napa Valley red that captures the elegance and power of a great hillside Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced from a steep, southwest-facing site in the Vaca Range, it marries luminous blue fruit with a striking mineral backbone. This single-vineyard bottling is part of BOND’s famed portfolio of “Grand Cru” Napa sites, offering a rare glimpse into the character of one of the valley’s most distinctive terroirs.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Quella shows a deep garnet to opaque purple hue, with a vivid, youthful rim that hints at its long life ahead. The nose is quintessential Quella: lifted blue fruit—blueberries, boysenberries and ripe plums—layered with crème de cassis, kirsch and a refined, stony minerality. Subtle notes of black truffle, tar, damp earth and a whisper of graphite add complexity and depth as it opens. On the palate, the wine is both supple and precise, with a texture that feels almost weightless yet undeniably concentrated. Saturated flavors of blackberry and plum compote mingle with blue fruit, cocoa nib and savory, earthy undertones. The tannins are ultra-fine and beautifully choreographed across the palate, providing structure without aggression, while vibrant acidity keeps everything fresh and poised. The finish is very long, echoing with dark fruit, mineral notes and a gentle salinity. With its balance and concentration, the 2017 Quella has excellent aging potential, evolving gracefully over 15–25 years, gaining nuance, tertiary aromas and even silkier texture with time in the cellar.

Production
Quella originates from a steep, southwest-facing vineyard carved into the eastern slopes of the Vaca Mountains overlooking Napa Valley, near Joseph Phelps and Denali Estate. The site is defined by its pale, fractured tufa and rocky, well-draining soils, which naturally restrict vigor and concentrate flavor, while the exposure ensures ample sunlight and cooling afternoon breezes to preserve freshness. Grapes are harvested by hand in small lots at optimal ripeness, with meticulous sorting in the vineyard and again at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Vinification typically involves small-batch fermentations in temperature-controlled vessels, with gentle extraction to capture Quella’s hallmark finesse rather than brute power. The wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where it undergoes a precision élevage to polish the tannins, build texture and integrate oak while preserving the purity of fruit and mineral character.

Food & Serving
Bond Quella 2017 is a superb partner for refined, richly flavored cuisine. It pairs beautifully with prime ribeye or filet mignon, roasted lamb with rosemary, slow-braised short ribs, or venison with a dark berry reduction. Earthy sides such as wild mushroom ragout, truffle-infused potato purée, grilled eggplant or roasted root vegetables also highlight its savory, mineral nuances. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show both aromatic lift and textural depth. Given its youth and structure, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully unfold and the tannins to soften, though older bottles (10+ years) may require a shorter, more gentle decant.

Producer
BOND is one of Napa Valley’s most revered producers, founded by legendary vintner Bill Harlan with the vision of crafting a collection of single-vineyard wines that express the region’s most exceptional hillside terroirs at a “Grand Cru” level. Rather than focusing on appellations, BOND centers its work around a handful of meticulously chosen sites—Melbury, Quella, St. Eden, Vecina and Pluribus—each bottled separately to reveal its unique character. Over the years, BOND has achieved international acclaim and consistently high critical ratings, becoming a benchmark for modern Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Its wines are highly allocated, sought after by collectors worldwide, and recognized for their combination of power, precision and remarkable aging capacity.
