Description
Bollinger R.D. 2004 is a rare vintage Champagne that captures the house’s signature depth, precision, and remarkable patience. "R.D." stands for Recently Disgorged, meaning this wine spent many years aging on the lees before release, preserving both complexity and freshness in a style that has become one of Bollinger’s most celebrated traditions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a refined golden hue with a lively, persistent mousse. The nose is layered and expressive, with aromas of ripe orchard fruit, citrus peel, toasted brioche, honey, and warm spice, all lifted by a distinct mineral edge.
The palate is intense and structured, combining notes of dried fruit, lemon, roasted nuts, and a subtle saline finish. Its Extra Brut dosage keeps the profile precise and dry, allowing the richness from extended lees aging to shine through. Bollinger R.D. 2004 has excellent aging potential and can be enjoyed now or cellared for further development.
Production
Bollinger R.D. 2004 is crafted from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir sourced exclusively from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards in Champagne. The 2004 vintage benefited from favourable growing conditions, producing healthy grapes with strong ripeness and excellent acidity. Fermentation takes place in small oak barrels, a hallmark of the house that adds texture, depth, and subtle complexity.
The wine then ages for at least 12 years on its lees in Bollinger’s cellars before being disgorged shortly before release. This extended maturation builds richness and aromatic complexity, while the late disgorgement helps preserve the wine’s freshness and energy.
Food & Serving
This Champagne is a superb partner for refined dishes such as lobster, scallops, sashimi, truffle risotto, or roast poultry with delicate sauces. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses or simply as a contemplative aperitif. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is not recommended; instead, open it shortly before serving to let the wine gradually reveal its full complexity.
